Tonka Turkey Trot @ Minnetonka HS

Really exceeded expectations today. Had hoped to be around 17:00 on a good day, but apparently I was ready for more. That's one of the best parts about running--being surprised at what you can do.

Weather was very cold (about 20 degrees). Warmed up two miles and could not feel hands or feet, and thought there was no way I was going to be able to run fast today. Did feel better once I went back inside and applied the Tiger Balm generously. Decided to wear half tights at last minute, and that wasn't a problem. Only thing that really bothered me at end of race was fingers and toes--so cold they hurt.

Went out hard with the lead pack of local college kids (mostly St Johns, but winner was from St Thomas). Was great to mix it up with a lead pack for a change. After about a mile, the top 5 put some distance on me, but I was able to surge and drop everyone else. From about 1.5 miles on it was just cruising and trying to close the gap. One kid started to come back to me but just ran out of real estate.

Thrilled to run this fast given the conditions. Renews my confidence and gets me excited to build on it. Pretty cool to be the old man mixing it up with the kids, ha.
