Speedwork in KC:800 meter repeats

Notes

I wanted to try to start doing some marathon paced speedwork with more of an uptempo recovery interval, and with greater volume. I had thought about doing a float workout with 800's where i run one 800 at the faster marathon paced time(for me 7:18 for a 3:10 marathon, and then do a floating recovery at the slower paced marathon pace of 7:28 for a 3:15 marathon(BQ for a 40 year old). It did'nt quite workout as well as i had wanted because it was tough getting in the right pace range for the repeat yet alone the recovery. So the first couple i did i just threw out a set distance for a recovery and just walked briefly(less than a minute and than jumped into the next one) Then that did'nt work because the rythm was way off going into the repeat. So i reverted to doing my standard 800 meter repeat at the faster end of the marathon pace and then jogged the following 800 rest interval at a faster than normal clip which was just right to make the following repeat a challenge but not unsurmountable either. I ran 2 miles WU(8:49 and 8:05). 8 x 800 meters w/the 800 recovery starting after the 4th one. The first couple were rough starting trying to get loosened up, but they settled in nicely after that: 3:53,3:47,3:34,3:34/4:18,3:42/4:27,3:42/4:36,3:40/4:16,and 3:40; followed by a mile CD(8:29). Ended this workout feeling like i could have done a few more at least at that effort. Hopefully in the future the repeat efforts will start feeling even easier, and the recovery float times will decrease as well. Very pleased with the volume of speedwork tonight and the pace associated with it.
