---First run in 469 days. Three dry-heaves. My heart hurts.---

Finally got out the door for the first time in 469 days and just for the second time in 524 days. This was obviously the longest runless streak of my life, and my body did not disappoint.

It took me a lot just to get out of bed at 5:45 a.m., not because I was tired, but because I knew how much pain was coming my way. I did my usual routine, lagged a bit and didn’t get the Garmin satellites linked up until 6:43 a.m. The weather was practically perfect at 54 degrees and a light mist. I remember starting, smiling and laughing out loud.

And then something surprising happened. I felt good and felt like I hadn’t missed a step since the last time I was in shape in early-2008. But then I looked down at my watch and only 42 seconds had gone by. And I was going uphill. And I’m fat and out of shape. My legs then started to hurt (something that doesn’t normally happen to me regardless of what shape I’m in), mainly my quads, and I started to breathe real loud around the 1-minute mark. It never got any better.

I was just trying to make up to the top of the hill (0.43 miles, 89.5 feet incline), knowing that going down the long hill (0.68 miles, 147 feet decline) would be easy. Not so fast as my first dry-heave came at 0.84 miles into the run. I turned the corner at 1.10 miles and immediately wanted to stop and take a break, partly because I was tired and partly because I had to run the final 0.34 miles uphill (57 feet incline). I made it about 0.10 miles further until I dry-heaved and stopped to take a rest at 1.20 miles. I walked back one light pole and back and started up again on a bit of a running start. I made it the rest of the way without incident before dry-heaving at the finish. I walked up to the bus stop and back after and waddled my way back to my apartment.

Once I got inside things just didn’t feel good. My legs were sore, my breathing was still bad and my chest hurt. I’m hoping it was just my lungs and not my heart, but who knows?

Hopefully my next run will be before Sept. 7, 2016.
