Notes

The good news is I’m still undefeated at Lake Murray and I’ve never been passed of the nine times I’ve run it, including four times where I was challenged at the end. The only difference with today is that it wasn’t some joker who was dogging it/walking and then picked it up to try to stay with me at the end.

Today I saw two guys on their way back while I was still heading out to the fence. They looked like they were going at a good pace so I decided I would work on catching them on the way back. I had planned on going easy, but it doesn’t take much to get my ego going. I can’t remember exactly where I saw them, but they at least had a 0.10-mile lead, maybe 0.20 miles. I gradually worked on getting them and finally caught them with roughly a mile left. They were probably going 7:15-7:20 pace at that time and I made the move like it was nothing, controlling (holding) my breath while doing it. I saw the one guy look over like, “Who does this guy think he is?”

I kept working like it was a race (only two minutes slower per mile) and tried to put some distance on them. I thought I had a good lead until I heard a voice from behind me and I’m sure it was one of them saying, “Go ahead after him if you want.” Then, with about 0.50 miles left, I heard the footsteps and knew they were closing in. I made a brief surge but they still stayed on me. The taller guy, the one who gave me that look out of the corner of his eye, came into view with about 0.22 miles left (although he and the other guy were taking the inside, while I ran the perimeter on the outside). I looked back and told them, “I knew you guys would catch back up.” The taller guy said something about the age difference, even though the other guy couldn’t have been more than one or two years older than me.

Anyway, we stayed together and I told them that I was almost at my stopping point and they said they were stopping there, too. We cruised into the finish together (with them still on the inside) with nobody kicking. I don’t know if I could have mustered up a kick, but there was no way I was going to let them beat me. It would have been interesting.

I PR’d on the 5.14 out and back part by 1:13 (out in 7:30 pace, back in 7:01 pace). So much for an easy/recovery run. Last 1.14 miles were at 6:39 pace.

The bad news is that my left hamstring hurt every step - landing and pushing off. Good thing the good news outweighs the bad news.
