the strangest thing i saw today was a guy dressed up in red as some kind of superhero, hanging out with two others on the concrete step by the river in front of the liquor store. what was most interesting was the birds. the wind was so strong they could hover, esp the kites. a seagull flew in and landed right in front of me with some of the friendlier pigeons. he stood there for a while looking kind of scraggly, preening. fights among kites and crows over dead stuff on the beach. could count on one hand the number of surfers willing to brave the waves today. windy, rough, blown out. mud colored foam blown about in sudden gusts. very quiet this morning. not so many familiar faces... revving up for the bon holiday i guess
