Do I wave goodbye to Waiheke? (Read 632 times)

Now that was a bath...

God i'm a whinger. I apologise beforehand for living up perfectly to the Antipodean insult of 'Whinging Pom' but I feel really pissed about this knee injury and I am feeling really negative today. I have my first cross training session (and next physio appointment) today where I get to do a whole ten minutes on the bike. Ten bloody minutes. How is this going to keep up my fitness levels? I can feel my muscle mass disappearing already and I have only stopped for five days. Now assuming that I can run again in two weeks (and that might just be a pipe dream) and also working on the assumption that when I start back it will be gentle running, no hills - I will have two weeks to get ready for the 12k. Will it even be a good idea to take on a hill run with much steeper hills than the ones I am tackling in my training or am I risking injuring myself again/further? The thing is that I always wanted Waiheke to be my first race. The day I started to run (six whole weeks ago) I got on the computer and googled races in Auckland. This island race was the one that jumped out at me. The harder it seemed the more I wanted to run it. I am so mad about this injury because my training was so perfectly on track for doing this race. I would have had one month of training at race distance or longer and all the hill running had improved me heaps. I think about running in January now and it scares me that I will have to hold back for the whole race as I am scared about this injury. I have until January 12th to make up my mind so I suppose I should just shut up, do what the doctor tells me, then see how it feels when I get back to running. In fact I can actually enter on the day if I pay a late fee. There you go. I feel better already. All I needed to do was whinge a bit. I guess I feel frustrated that my physio can't tell me when I will be running again. Whinge over. Claire xxx

Yep, I say play it by ear closer to race day--your body may surprise you! Seriously, when you are in the midst of an injury your brain will feed you all sorts of horrific outcomes. I've had a couple of months of bad running, but I keep reminding myself that it hasn't always been this way and it won't always be so difficult. We all go through rough patches. I think you'll do fine at your big race...and, even if you have to run it slower than you had hoped, I am certain that you will cross the finish line no worse for wear if you follow your body's signals in the meantime. I think you'll be surprised how quickly your body will respond to rest. Give it time. I know you're a runner but, you'll be surprised how quickly you'll rebound. Do the cross-training & keep your aerobic level up & you'll make the race. "Whinging pom" I love it. Thanks for adding to my vocabulary

Maybe I need to get my mind of of the gutter, but when I saw the word "pom" I read it as porn. The 'm' looks a lot like 'rn' :-)

Derek - From now on I will refer to myself as 'Whinging Porn'. The gutter,is a great place to be sometimes. To quote Oscar Wilde 'We are all of us in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars'. That's me, down there in the gutter like a true 'Whinging Porn' should be. Ha! Claire xxx

Claire uses the term whinge (a term that my hubby and I have adopted from our time in the UK and often use in reference to our son's behavior) and quotes Oscar Wilde. Claire is cool. Big grin k

Claire, if you can up your time cross training that would be great. That ought to keep your cardio fitness up. As for running, with your obvious talent I am sure that when they give you a green light to run you will be able to finish your 12k in good time. So maybe you won't beat the course record this time around Smile but considering what you're going through, any finishing time will be a success. Good luck and chin up, Ewa

Well they let me do 20 minutes on the bike and set it at a high hill resistance when I complained as only the 'Whinging Porn' can. It felt good to sweat again! They asked if I wanted the air con turned up but I wanted to feel hot and sticky - I wanted to feel the exercise and suffer the heat. The physio session was the same as the other day. Ultrasound - weird machine and massage. If it doesn't get better (or at least show considerable improvement) by the end of next week they will refer me to an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital for an MRI and further tests. I am limping all the time now! My leg doesn't hurt at all if it is straight - but as soon as my knee is bent it can't bear weight any more. I spoke to them about January 20th. She said it is close, but that we will know more by the end of next week. I guess that if I can't run it, then I just have to go back to the event diary and find something else that tickles my fancy.
