Nike FuelBand launched today.
My take on it is that it isn't measuring time, distance or speed per se, but gauges your activity level in some arbitrary Nike units. Is that a bad thing?

It is not a bad thing to measure activity or to even encourage it, but it is pretty gimmicky.
I would be surprised if many people pay $150 for something that tells you how active you have been today, simply by measuring your arm swing. That is a pretty crazy price point, especially considering what technology I can buy for $150.

My take is the same as yours re: the units.
I suppose if it promotes an active lifestyle it can't be bad. I don't think I'll stand in line to get one though.

I use a FitBit (not for distance or calories, but just for a general idea of activity).

I was thinking if you both wore one you could see who was putting the most effort in, I'm sure Eric would be more than happy to include rejig the training log so anyone owning one could post their results!

Now, maybe the FuelBand can also be somehow applied to socialist ideas.
I've been looking for something about the size of a "Live Strong" band with date/time and a chronograph mode; 30 lap memory would be nice but not necessary. basically a miniture timex ironman for days that I want to go out and run for an easy/recovery run or single track trail run and I don't need a Garmin or a Garmin won't work.
If anyone knows of a device please let me know.

You just have to completely privatize your socialism. Let Nike run the gov'ment.
Note that in the real world the activities that burn the most calories heavily use the largest skeletal muscles which are mostly in the legs.
In contrast, by putting the sensor on your wrist, Nike is encouraging wanking.
