Smokers (Read 972 times)

It took probably a good 5 years before I didn't occasionally smell cigarette smoke in our house.

Its beyond amazing isn't it...

I thought people were smoking in the bathroom here at work, but it turned out that they were just using the bathroom after having been outside for a smoke.

How does that work? man oh man.   It just lingers. 

So glad I quit 15 years ago! 

I will NEVER again stay at the Luxor hotel in Vegas...at least not in the pyramid.  When I was there a little over a year ago we had a non-smoking room, but the only thing separating me from the smoke of the casino was the room door.  Awful.  I was in asthma hell for 4 days.  And the strip...it's always amazing to me how smoky it is walking on the strip, even though it's outdoors.  It's like being in a college basement party.

Do smokers have any idea how nasty they smell?

 

And how on earth does their smell linger so long?  This woman just came into my office, and did not touch anything, and the place still smells like her and she was here for 3 minutes, 45 minutes ago.      

I fucking hate that.  Anytime I get stuck in the elevator with someone who was just outside for a smoke break, I can smell it on myself for the rest of the day.   

On a related note, when I was young I had a best friend who's parents were heavy smokers.  I remember making gingerbread houses with him and of course we ate a lot of the graham crackers (digestive biscuits to those across the pond).  I thought his always tasted nasty and were stale, even when right out of the sealed box.  The ones in my parents house always tasted as they should.  It was very odd to me at the time, since they were the same brand.  Years later I connected the taste to his parents smoking.  Gross.

Smoke smells differently at different times of year too. Usually it is stickier in cold weather. I remember at my grandparent's house, a can of Coke would taste differently...it had somehow seeped through aluminum.

I ADORE our next door neighbors and the wife is an AMAZING baker...but a lot of the treats she gives us at Christmas taste like smoke.  It makes me sad...this is a woman who had gastric bypass surgery and quit smoking.  For about a year she looked incredible and so healthy.  She was walking at a good clip every day for at least a half hour.  But eventually she caved to her former addictions and is now nearly as large as she was pre-surgery and smokes like a chimney.  She told us a while back that she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as well.

Smoke isn't the only thing that can flavor food, though.  My MIL is a chronic user of mothballs (at least in her vacation home) and stuff from her pantry tastes like mothballs.  Smoke actually tastes better.
