3650 Miles in the Hurtlocker

Sucker Punches (Read 1095 times)

Got to test the knee/calf with run/walk last week.  No pain - but every step I am scared to death. "Is that it?  Is that is?  Could that be it?"

Run portion of yesterday's outing was 46 minutes.....better than nothing.  But a 20 miler seems nearly impossible from where i sit today. I know patience is a virtue.  One I don't have.

But I am grateful - as is my family - that I was able to finally run a bit and get outside.

Sorry to hear about your pains Rocken, Spaniel and HappyFeet.  I hope Santa is good to all of us this year - with quick healing and decent weather.

AWESOME news! Glad to hear someone is making progress!! And Thanks!

I had MRI'S done on my ankle and foot/joints last night. It took over an hour and I actually fell asleep since it was after 10 pm.  I broke down on Monday and got a boot from doctor. Anyone that knows me knows that it has to be really bad for me to actually wear the thing. I'm sure my doctor was a bit surprised since at my appointment last week I flat out told her that I wouldn't wear one UNLESS I was told I needed to AFTER the MRI. I see the doctor on Friday. Outlook doesn't look great but keeping fingers crossed 3rd week of couch bound and no signs of it easing up. I had posted in the when I reached 2,000 miles that now I could stop for the year. I was joking, but apparently my body said ok sounds good

    Feeling the growl again

Thanks Tara, Good to hear you are on the mend.  Hope Spaniel's issue does not turn into anything nastier.

The problem with my issue is I that I don't have any problem while actually running, but later when I have this constant pain in the thigh due to the nerve inflammation/irritation.  Sleep is severely compromised as I keep waking up every 20-30 minutes with the leg screaming. As injuries go, I think mine is relatively minor, but according to one doctor there is not a real solution if rest does not fix it, short of surgically cutting off the offending nerve which is only a sensory nerve and will not compromise motion, but the leg will likely be numb the rest of my life.

Mine has not grown into what it was a year ago which sharply curtailed my running, but it has not gone away again either.  Perhaps I missed where your is, but mine is right with the sciatic nerve itself (no slicing that one!).  The worst it has done to me recently is when I pick up the pace, I start losing some control of my right leg.  I plan to do a workout tonight so I'll have to see if that is continuing or has gone away again.

That sucks!  Has the cross-training and PT helped with the injury?  I always find that after stretches of cross-training, the first few runs feel awkward and difficult.  After about a week, it begins to feel better and more natural.  You still have plenty of time to get ready for Boston.  No need to hit the panic button yet.

Ugh. On the bright side -- depending on your goals -- it's nature's weight-loss plan. 10 of the 50 pounds I lost in 2000 were due to pneumonia.

Yes  - on Sunday I actually did a run/walk of more than 7.5 miles   - the majority of running and I had no pain.  So I was on cloud 9 - It was also the first run I did outside - and with my usual running group.  Of course, Monday morning I woke up feeling like death.

Two or three weeks, I think... I don't really remember. It was pretty bad. Wasn't an ordinary pneumonia, there was something else going on; I don't think they ever figured it out. I would not have had the energy to post to RA.

Update on me, 2 fractures (2nd & 3rd metatarsal) bursitis and signs of what may or may not be a progressive arthritis. So no weight bearing for 2 weeks. I go back to ortho on 22nd and then the Neuro/physiology specialist on the 23rd. Good thing I signed myself up to not 1 but 2 winter 5k series. Guess I'll just have to stand back and cheer 13 year old son and the rest of the racers on.

                        Walk-Jogger

An update, if anyone was wondering were I've been. I ran 6.3 miles today on a flat paved trail with my DW. I could not keep up with her 8:30 pace today, and had to walk-jog it in after the 3rd mile. She had to come back for me after she finished. Six months ago I ran 10 easy miles at a 6:53 pace on this same trail. This is due to the first part of my cancer treatment, the ADT shots. Radiation starts this week, so it's all downhill from here for a while, and a crap-shoot after that as to how much speed I'll eventually get back. With a lot of luck, a year from now I may be 90% back, minus another year older of course. Time will tell . . .

Good luck through your treatments Cecil. Hope for the best with a speedy recovery.  I would think your efforts of staying fit throughout the years will help with that.  I have a co-worker that has gone through five treatments so far.  After the six, they're going to do a cancer cell count and then go through stem cell removal.  If it were not for his attention to physical activity over the years, he wouldn't have been a candidate for stem cell work.  By being able to do that, his success rate should increase by about 30% over the normal treatments.
