"When a person trains once, nothing happens. When a person forces himself to do a thing a hundred or a thousand times, then he certainly has developed in more ways than physical. Is it raining? That doesn't matter. Am I tired? That doesn't matter, either. Then willpower will be no problem."

Huh. Alpine and Portola Rd, that's about a mile from here, where I run every day. Not gonna be the fastest course, but I may have to give it a try.

C'mon out!  I ran it last year (inaugaural run) and it is definitely slow.  Run downhill for a mile and a half and then turnaround.  It's a PA-USATF Grand Prix race so there will be a lot of fast runners there.  After last year's race I jogged back down the course to Windy Hill Preserve and ran to whatever that peak is up there (Windy HIll?).  I must say that that run was one of the most awesome in these mountains that ring the Bay Area.  Seemed like I was in the Alps somewhere (specifically that trail that loops around back to the bottom after you get to the top)   I'm sure you've been up there?

Yep. But I have never run all the way up (unlike my wife). There is lots of great running here -- just nothing flat.

You know this is not a flat course right?  There is probably 2X the elevation change of DPR over half the distance.  I should be around that weekend if you need any support (or someone to drink beer with).

I looked at the elevation profile....it did not seem horrible.  I went through every marathon within driving distance (and a few that were not) trying to find something that would work, and this was the best I could come up with.  Anything flatter conflicted with either a work committment or was too close to my 50-miler.

I even considered flying out to Virginia Beach in March, but given my current training trajectory I elected to wait until May.  Bayshore was a possibility, but travel/lodging with that race is always a headache (hotels are likely already sold out).

2X the elevation change of DPR is still not bad....DPR is pretty darned flat.

If for some reason you are going to be around there that weekend let's stay in touch, I'd love to grab a beer.
