        5.3 miles for me.

D - I'm glad your family is okay.

        Phil - ouch!

Bluerun - I'd like to do the shallow dive. My aunt was a diver and talked about the beauty underwater an I used to love documentaries about life under water (I.e. Cousteau). I've never had the money or opportunity to do anything like that though. On vacation, I always head to the mountains, not the sea. That could change, though I don't think my husband would be all that interested.

Cy - in the US there is also Medicaid that takes care of poor people. A large portion of Obamacare was the expansion of Medicaid to cover more people. It is a system more like yours, with crowded clinics and long waits. Some of my family members were on Medicaid and had various surgeries and major health issues that were treated under the program. It isn't great care, but it is healthcare for those who have no other options.  Medicaid also pays for a lot of end of life care for elderly people with no money as well. US emergency rooms are not allowed legally to turn away anyone, even if they have no money or insurance, so a lot of ERs end up being de facto clinics for the poor.

          Shit’s getting real.

Interesting too that the first marathon of the year for the group is actually the last marathon of the fall training cycle. There was a big race every other week it seemed!

Thanks Ginny, I figured there was something like that.

What sound weird to me is that if it is known that your system costs double what ours costs, then why not mimic ours? There's no patent on it.

And if the answer is "the government won't budge", you have a say in that regularly (every 4 years or so). I know I'm simplifying things here, but I also know that if enough people want something, the government will do it.

We do the same thing here: complain about the government. Hello... WE elected them.

Is it the last race of the fall cycle or the first race of the spring cycle?

                      Because socialism!!

We have a pretty rigid 2-party system. Generally those who support the Democrats want some kind of single-payer universal health care system, those who support Republicans don’t

You (and other parliamentary systems) have one party (more or less) in charge of everything at a given time. Our system has a President and two houses of Congress, all three of which need to agree for anything to pass, and rarely are all three run by the same party. Obamacare passed when all three were Democrat. And even then, it barely passed and was really not that radical a change - nothing remotely resembling a single-payer system. So many industries (with powerful lobbies who influence both parties) rely on the current system, a complete overhaul would be too massive an upheaval. But still, from the moment it passed Republicans vowed to repeal it the first chance they got. Then ultimately changed that to “repeal and replace”, when they realized people actually liked some parts of Obamacare. And they had full control for the first two years of Trump’s term, but could not actually agree amongst themselves what to replace it with. They’ve done some things to chip away at it. Anyway, big changes are hard in our system. For better or worse.

It's been the trend the past few years. I remember last year my RP said to me (I think in mid-January) "this winter has been great for running and I don't even care what the rest of the winter is like. I won't complain ".  Shortly thereafter the cold and snow arrived and we were running in -6 degrees

I think mostly people are terrified of change and any politician is afraid to admit that taxes will go up with Medicare  for all(this is death) even though overall costs will go down. People can only hear the first part.
