I don't plan cutback weeks because life seems to give them to me whether I like it or not. And I remind myself of this fact, and that it is okay, but I still want to stomp my feet and whine like a 2 year old being presented with broccoli(oddly enough, my boys both like broccoli....but most parents know what I mean)
Anyways, last Friday I had a bruised feeling on my knee cap. I couldn't for the life of me remember hitting it on something so I was concerned it was an overuse injury from Thursday night's 13 miler. Friday is a rest day, so no worries but Saturday was a planned 18 miler. Being safe, I thought I would wait until Sunday to run and give my knee an extra day to rest(incase it was overuse since I couldn't remember an impact injury). Knee felt fine Saturday, the day was a beautiful 52 degree and sunny day. I sad panda, but I smart panda
Sunday: 33 and foggy rain. 18 miles, got done and the knee was fine. I was tired but fine. Well since I finished my LR at 6pm on Sunday, I figured my usual 8 miler Monday morning at 6am was just asking for it(since I still have no explaination for for my knee thing on Friday). Since I don't schedule cutback weeks I figured fine, my week is going to be a cutback week of 8 miles and I would have Monday just be a rest day for my LR I did Sunday afternoon.
Well now we had a snowstorm and I missed this morning's 3 miler. Great. Another missed run this week. That brings me up to 11 miles short. I can't run tonight(obligations), I run Thursday morning and evening already(a 3 and a 14). I think I will try to make up the 3 on Friday morning(usual rest day) because my hubby just let me know he is working Saturday so my LR again needs to be Sunday........
Grrrrrr.........
So guess what happens to Monday's 8 miler?? You guessed it.....missed for week #2 in a row.

hey, it happens sometimes. Sometimes life gets in the way....injuries, sickness, family obligations, work... try not
to be too upset. Be thankful for the runs you did complete, and look forward to returning to a full schedule next week. Your legs will be extra fresh, your body will be extra rested, and you will rock all of your runs . Glad your knee is ok....maybe 8 miles less is what it needed to heal!

Nakedbabytoes. Its frustrating when we miss our scheduled runs, especially if we're training for a race. But I agree with Kristin, you're really gonna be rocking those miles when your legs are rested and back to 100%. Take care, and try to take it in stride.

Yes, it sucks, and I used to feel the same anxiety every time I would accumulate lost miles (and it has happened in EACH one of my training cycles). You know what I do, now? I look at the schedule and, from the start, I tell myself that it's ok to finish the training cycle with a deficit of about 20 miles. I have learned to expect it (that's IF I am not sick, or injured, for a number of weeks. Then it would be a different story, of course.) When I can, I add a mile, sometimes two, to my scheduled weekly runs. Especially the easy ones, or the recovery ones. So, I often finish a week with 3-5 miles extra. Then, for some reason (family obligations, a bad cold, mental fatigue, a very important time trial coming up, etc...), I skip a run and I'm suddenly behind, by 7 to 10 miles. I monitor the whole thing and it usually works out to about 20 lost miles come race day and I'm ok with that. We do what we can and that's all we can do, right? You'll be alright. Congrats on the LRs (13 and 18) so close to each others! It's not easy to pull that. :-)

Thanks for reminding me that it's all good in the end. I am healthy and it's just a hiccup, not an end all be all. I just see the slippery slope of getting to the start line underprepared and having your marathon debut suck as a result. I don't want to spend the whole race with regret of miles not ran. So that stays in the back of my mind....and on days like today.....the front and side and top and bottom...and screams at me!
It's just a week......it's just a week out of 18....chill!

I completely understand! Missed runs stink, but you will get back on track. Those miles aren't going to make a bit of difference in the long run.

As I was complaining about probably not getting to run today, my wife stopped me mid-whine and asked me if missing my run today would have any effect on my half in seven weeks, I had to admit that it wouldn't. Hate it when she's right (which is most of the time lol).
