As we approach 2013, a little reminder about race manners (Read 538 times)

race obsessed

Dude in question is a minimum of 2x as wide as the elites and that was not because he was built like the hulk either.

How do you end up in the front in a big race like that?  I have been in a few of the larger races and your corral is on your bib.

      Short term goal: 17:59 5K

      Mid term goal:  2:54:59 marathon

Long term goal: To say I've been a runner half my life.  (I started running at age 45).

This may come as a shock but a whole lot of big races either don't have corrals or don't enforce them.

The second largest marathon in the US in 2012 will have been the Honolulu Marathon from a couple weeks ago.  It has corrals... including ropes in between.  That people just walk through.  It is completely common in that race for walkers to bizarrely start up front.

          Sometimes they don't know.

Sometimes they know, but don't care.

Ignore or because of headphones, completely ignore the "elite runners" escorts and warnings. Loudly talking shit about someone else's "gear" speaks volumes about class and character.

            PR's : HM 1:51:15  -  5K 21:27

It is, of course, permissible to talk shit about someone who brings gels to a 10K.  Big grin

The Boston Marathon used to be like that. The first 200 yards are 1 nice downhill. Some people used to run this section hard up front just to be on tv. I saw a guy with a newspaper page 1 photo of himself among the pack, and asking Bill Rodgers to sign once.

My one friend who emphasizes that she is not built for speed (and is satisfied with that) actually lined up at the front of a 10K race that we both did recently.  I think she just didn't care because she was there to have fun, and she knew she was getting passed anyway.  I lined up a few rows back and didn't even recall passing her once the race started.  She finished in 1 hour and change, and I finished in 51 and change.

I have one to add.  IF you are moving around placing yourself, don't look as you switch positions.  Because, after all that bitch Docket behind you that is running more faster than you and that you trampled her foot fell hard thanks to you and now you one less runner to worry about.

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

                      Are we there, yet?

Don't forget to run the tangents, even if in doing so you cutoff all those runners who have the inside track on you.
