Microbreweries to visit

Inspired by another thread, elsewhere... What microbreweries are worth the travel? Some thoughts - - Yazoo, Nashville TN - Bells, Kalamazoo MI - Shlafly, St. Louis, MO - BBC, Louisville, KY - Goose Island, Chicago, IL

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

Ommegang - Cooperstown, NY (10 minutes from the Baseball Hall of Fame, too, if you like that) http://www.ommegang.com/ Victory Brewing - Downingtown, PA http://www.victorybeer.com/ Stoudt's - Adamstown, PA http://www.stoudtsbeer.com/brewery.html Troegs - Harrisburg, PA http://www.troegs.com/ Lancaster Brewing Co - Lancaster, PA http://www.lancasterbrewing.com/ With the exception of Ommegang, these breweries are all within a one to one and a half hour's drive of each other. A well planned long weekend can be a great time without being rushed or getting a DUI.

JVol44: I used to go to Stoudt's Oktorberfest a lot when I lived in Philly. Awesome. Great beers, too. Lancaster MB is good, too. They had a float w/ a stout (or porter, been awhile) and vanilla ice cream. Mmmm. Appalachian brewery/restaurant in Harrisburg is good, too. Great pork BBQ on ciabatta. Here in Pittsburgh, The Church Brewworks is good (was an old Catholic church that was going to be demolished. They de-churchified it and saved it from becoming a parking lot or something.) And Penn Brewery, which, I believe, was PA's first microbrewery. Excellent beers following the Reinheitsbegot. You could not leave PA and never be lacking for awesome beers. OK, side trip to DE to get Dogfish Head is acceptable. Still, I'd put PA beers up against any state's offerings anytime. Willrunforbeer: The Church sells cases and minikegs, but I think the distribution is local. It's the first restaurantI take visitors.

Can we leftcoast-folk add some? 21st Amendment (disclaimer - owned by friends) - San Francisco, CA. Good location! Fresno's own! Sequoia Brewery, Fresno, CA. You can crash chez moi, 1.1 mi away. Seriously. Let me know. Oh, and do try the deep-fried pickles. I'm not kidding. Beaver St. Brewery, Flagstaff, AZ (at 7,000ft, a great place to go in the summer!)..Flag has some other brewpubs, but this is the first and the best, IMO, ...I was there on their opening day...try the BLT pizza or the grilled salmon...mmm... Crown St. Brewery, Pasadena. Been there relatively forever. Well OK at least 15 yrs. Shit, I can't remember now. Anyway. Nice place, tasty beer. Karl Strauss - any one of these in San Diego County is worth a stop if you're around. But I wouldn't make a special trip. Alternatively, Karl Strauss is sold at Disney's California Adventure park. Leave the kiddies at Disneyland, the adults can go to California adventure and taste the beer and wine. Works for me. Cheers, Arla

I'm in PA, and I recently saw a few cases of Gritty's in the aisle. I guess a wayward sales rep came a bit too far south. Smile

The staff hadn't even tried any yet, so I couldn't get a recommendation - so, help me out guys. I'd like to check this out - any particularly good offerings I should go for first? I'm pretty open to suggestions, with the exception of IPA's or the super-hopped beers.

They tend to have good seasonal beers. My two favorite Gritty offerings are the Black Fly Stout and the Vacationland Ale. They are all pretty good though.
