Masters Running

Good morning Masters! No recaps, but there sure were a lot of great pictures of everyone's grandkids dressed up in their Halloween's finest!

4.22 run/walk miles this morning in 41 degrees. It felt downright balmy after last week! I finished with 25 minutes of weights, core and stretching. I think I mentioned about that woman who tripped and fell at the candy store where I work? We just found out on Wednesday that she passed away. I believe the cause was a brain aneurysm.  I wonder if she was having problems and that contributed to her fall, and hopefully not that her fall led to the brain aneurysm. Either way, how sad.

DH and I were channel surfing last night. "Six Feet Under" has been added to the Netflix choices. I don't know if anyone remembers that series from when it was on HBO, but it's great dark comedy. Each episode started out with someone dying. (the series is based on a family that runs a funeral home)

Off to sell chocolate. Have a great Friday everyone.

Jeanne - how sad for that poor woman!

      Carolyn - Levi is adorable!

I have not been feeling my best this week, due mostly I think to a UTI, and I still have not gotten out my winter running gear (I will this weekend, for sure), so I just did 2 miles walking on the TM.

      Happy Friday!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

How awful for that woman, Jlynne!

My mom is in pretty good spirits considering her arm break. She's thankful that at least it's her left arm and not her right/dominant arm.  Didn't have nearly as much pain yesterday as the first day. She's sees an orthopedist on Tuesday but surgery is not likely with where this break is. Just time and rest to let the bone fuse back together. I guess she gets out of making pies for Thanksgiving this year.

5.1 miles after work yesterday and I registered last night for the Lithia Loop Trail HM in Ashland tomorrow.  Who cares if it's raining the whole time right?

        Tammy

        Tramps

Thanks Jlynne. Sad for that woman. And, yeah, we used to watch Six Feet Under back in the day. I wonder how it holds up?

          Holly--feel better.

Tammy--sounds like it's going as well as it can for you mom.

No ride today. We're waiting for the crew to lay our fiber optic from the junction box on the road to our house. It's a long (250+ yards), convoluted route due to easement restrictions, a gravel drive, buried propane line and copper wire, etc.  I just walked the property with the supervisor trying to figure out the best route. In the end, we got permission from my neighbor to run it behind their house and through the woods on an abandoned road flat from the Civil War era (whose ownership is not at all clear) to our house. What could possibly go wrong? Pretty sure the crew won't be happy with their expedition through the woods with the trencher but it was simpler than the alternatives. They just lay cable to the house; installation technician is supposed to be here tomorrow to fish cable into the house and finish install.

If you never hear from me again, you'll know that it didn't go well.

          Be safe. Be kind.

Thanks for the start, Jeanne.  Very sad about the lady who fell.  Aneurysms are sneaky $%^&.

Good job sucking it up and deciding to run in the rain, Tammy.  Now no one will know if it's rain, sweat, or snot.  It's all good.

Also, I found a treat size gummi bears on the ground today. The H is like, are you really going to eat that??? It wasn't open, and its not like it was run over or anything, so yes.

Me? I got nuthin' so far.  The Hub at a humane hour to drive north for 1 of the last 3 Ducks home games, so I'm on my own until an inhumane hour Sunday morning.

I had a PT session last night for knee with the therapist I wish I could see anytime I want - Josh.  I was his last appt of the day - 4:45 - and didn't end up leaving until 6:00.  He's an athlete.  Does triathlons, spartathlons, mountain bikes, etc., so he's willing and happy to talk to me about anything and everything while he's treating the issue I'm there for.  We talked extensively about my hamstrings, stretching, foam rolling, strength training, and being smart about training as an aging athlete.  I told him how much I appreciated his willingness to talk to me, and he said , "Oh I  love it!  I love talking about all of it.  I was supposed to leave half an hour ago."   I told him the only reason I was seeing someone else for my hamstrings is because (1) it's so frigging hard to get into my primary, which (2) makes it so hard to get a referral to him.

It's Friday, my friends.  Enjoy ~~

Thanks, Jeanne, and good luck with the cable installation, Tramps!   I'm so sorry about the woman who died, Jeanne.  Sad.

Holly- I hope you feel better!

4.2 miles over on the path.  I really haven't quite adjusted to the cold yet.  I am unmotivated, and I have the Monkey Half on Sunday.  I don't consider that a very serious race, but I still have to do it!  I don't want to fall on any leaves or seeds in the road.

Lunch with a former co-worker today.

Jlynne - we re-watched the entire Six Feet Under this summer on HBOMax. I thought it was still good. Sad/scary about the woman who fell in your store.

Tramps - good luck with all of that. Although I'm guessing that just getting a crew from unnamed service provider onsite, ready to go was likely 90% of the task... so good job there.

2-ish miles mostly walking around the neighborhood, in the dark. I also had lunch with an ex-colleague today!

Quiet in here today.  J Lynne  I remember enjoying that show.

Leslie, your PT sounds pretty wonderful.

I got the call back on my MRI results.  Ugh.  2 slightly bulging discs and a third that is deemed moderate and pushing on a transverse nerve which in turns hits the sciatic.  It might be a traverse nerve rather than transverse.  Whatever…

referral to a spine specialist 2 1/2 hours away or referral to PT locally.  I chose PT because they seemed to want a snap decision on the phone call and I need more time to process this.  And, I had such wonderful results from PT last time I think it is the place to start.  I’ll keep the spine specialist in my back pocket if PT is unsuccessful.

Now I wait.  Hope to get an appointment next week though. They are not usually booked up beyond a week.

Jlynne, so sad about that customer. I never watched Six Feet Under, maybe I will give it a try. We just finished Killing Eve on Hulu, loved it (especially the first 2 seasons).

Anneb, I hope you are okay after your fall...

Hope you feel better soon, Holly.

                    Good luck on Sunday, KSA.

Dnaff, sorry to hear about your mri results. Hopefully the PT will be enough to get you feeling better.

Wild, Levi is adorable as a little banana!

Leslie, it sounds like you have found the perfect sports PT. I am envious!

Good luck with the installation, Tramps.

                    Have fun this weekend, Tammy!

I did a 5.1 this morning, too. Off to get my flu and covid vaccines now, so tomorrow I will rest.

first run in weeks; 4 fartlek miles. I'd say EZ, but I was going kind of faster than expected for a good chunk of it. Effort felt good, but later looking at HR data I was 20 beats higher than I usually am on that route!

PF didn't act up on the run, but was a bit sore afterwards (getting out of van after driving for 15 minutes), and is gone now, 2 hours later.

Years ago, we had to warn the girl about not eating candy found on the floor. She did anyway, and got sick. She was in HS. Now floor-candy is a language term in our family. But I'd eat it if it looked ok...don't tell.

Dawn, my somewhat cynical opinion about PT places -- even though I've gotten some benefit -- is that their main goal is to see how many visits are covered by your Medicare or other insurance and then design a plan to exactly consume them. They did help my back somewhat, but the thing that might have finally done it were the spinal steroid injections that my spinal surgeon prescribed as something to try before considering anything more drastic. Of course, everyone's back situation is different so I don't know if they'll suggest this for you.

Anne, I believe that "Don't Fall" might be Rule #2 here (have to ask TwoCat), so consider yourself on probation and don't let it happen again!  Glad you're OK with maybe just bruised pride instead of worse.

I feel that I'm really losing my edge (or worse). First off, I was actually embarrassed when the guy called me from the service shop yesterday to tell me how dirty my air filter and passenger compartment filter were. He was right, but I usually stay on top of that stuff and change them out myself since it's one of the few auto maintenance things that I can still do myself. I keep good records on everything but apparently don't look at them often enough. Then today I was doing some routine work in the garage to hang a charger on the wall and, remembering the old adage "measure twice and cut once", I measured at least two or three times and then still drilled the damn holes an inch too close to each other ! No harm done, easy recovery, but I really felt stupid.

I rode 15.78 miles with 890ft equivalent climbing on the trainer this morning. I think that I might be having some slight effects from the RSV vaccine that I got on Monday because I didn't feel particularly strong on the bike and was then a bit lightheaded after I got off. But again, no harm done and I'll see how the weekend goes.

KSA Tammy - the beauty of a HM is that's it's over with in two-and-a-half or three hours so, no matter how miserable the weather makes you, the warm car is just a little ways away, . . .whoops, . .   Monkey for KSA and trail for Tammy?  Maybe better forget what I said but have fun anyway, especially if the leaden sun keeps the clouds from turning into rain like happened here in Seattle to this morning's predicted rain, just right for a short mile down to the end of the bus line if it works out a little later in the afternoon after charing Mr. Volt up over at the charing station on First Hill to the steep park that looks down on the old Seattle Marathon course and, if not, I'll join the tampster in the rain (but not for two hours I don't think). Have fun.

Doug - that's too bad.  However, wait'll you hear this one: this guy whose aging 2013 Chevy Volt got rejuvenated with a new battery yesterday was doing fine this morning when he got in, put his foot on the brake while simultaneously pressing the start button to start it and drove down to Chinatown where, when he came back an hour later, the dashboard display was oddly on as if it had never been turned off and, for the life ot it, he couldn't get it to start this time with nothing but some spiraling arrows swirling around the dash display when he'd put his foot down on the brake and simultaneously press the start button like you're supposed to just like he did this morning, so he called up the shirttail who had brought the new battery over yesterday to replace the original from the fall of 2012 and, after loosening the battery cables and tightening them again, finally figured out that he'd never turned the car off when he went shopping because, to shut the engine down same as he's been doing in the same car since 2016, you just press the start button WITHOUT FOOT ON THE BRAKE like you have to do to start it so,  you're welcome, it's a pleasure to help make everyone else not only feel fast but also like geniuses.  DW called it the "A" word so I'll have to be careful but I think, if I haven't gotten it by now, it's unlikely to happen, . . . I hope, . . . or has it?.

Howdie friends.  What a fun week of running, pictures and stories this has been in our RA family world.

We are gathering in Leavenworth,  WA for an early family Thanksgiving celebration. Before we traveled here I was able to run 10 miles as my car tires were being changed .

Tammy / KSA - though I've never heard of it, NPR reminded me tomorrow is one of the 12 first day of the month Saturday's "National Play Outside Day," so if anyone thinks you're crazy for running in the rain, you can say it's not your fault as its NPOD.  With getting stuck down in Chinatown a mile-and-a-half away in a car that had been thoroughly cleaned out even of the emergency roadside tiny duffle that we've never used not even the pliers and screwdrivers I needed to check the new batter connections with so, though I felt like Mary Poppins sitting straight upright but only without the umbrella, I broke down and signed up for the annoying electric Lime Bikes that are scattered here and there all over town (along with Lime's electric scooters) and had it ride me back to the apt for a wrench and screwdriver that turned out to be not needed but it was so convenient not having to spend 45 minutes or so walking back or three bus transfers that would have saved me about five minutes, I got on one again at the recharge station to get back to the apt for a couple of hours before using the Lime app to get back on another one to go up and retrieve Mr. Volt. I was going to detour via one of the broadleaf rich parks on the way back but the thickening clouds wiped out even the sun's faintly leaden glare of earlier in the afternoon so I'll just put on a raincoat and go do it tomorrow for National Play Outside Day while KSA and Tammy do it too in their places. Anyone else?

BTW somebody, with now two apps on my phone [. . . for the (1) EV charging station and now (2) Lime bike], I sure feel modern, especially compared to people who are still getting internet connections by digging underground cables that have been around since before the Titanic. Edison? Now, if I could only be fast. Rats.  Oh, is MapMyWalk and app?

DW and I have been thoroughly enjoying the camping trip.  We explored a new trail which to a wonderful beach on Thursday. DW was concerned about getting lost.  I told her we’d eventually get out. It might be in body bags.  But we’ll get out.
