I had an excellent birthday yesterday! DW made dessert and we shared it with church friends after the late service, so I got to sleep in. Both kids were around for a change and we all went to see Harry Potter. I was amazed they hadn't seen it with their friends yet. Then softball where I hit 1000, and a nightcap running 2 miles with Maddy the crazy puppy to keep my streak going and make 40 again.

This week will likely be very similar to last week, with perhaps a few added miles.
Holly, you asked about Hill training within a 2-Big workouts per week program. If you're running the Hills truly as a harder workout (and not just running hills because you have to do them to get home!), then they absolutely should be counted as one of your two Big workouts for the week.

"Some are the strong, silent type. You can't put your finger on exactly what it is they bring to the table until you run without them and then you realize that their steadiness fills a hole that leaks energy in their absence." - Kristin Armstrong
Thanks, Holly.
Be safe. Be kind.
Thanks Holly wow has the heat and humidity been something else, even here in Maine! I'm going to run the 1st Old Port Half Marathon this Sunday since I have to do a long run anyways and it's the first one in a really beautiful setting. We'll see if I can get a sub 1:40 done in this heat.

1st Old Port Half Marathon - 1:40:29 (7:40) OA - 69 / 659 AG - 2 / 22 29 seconds shy of my goal but miles 11 & 12 really hurt the hip and knee. Good thing is I met a great Doctor at the massage tent and he confirmed that my IT Band is a mess! Asked if I could stand a bit of pain, and said he could fix it, but it was going to hurt! I'm checking into his practice and if everything looks good I'll make an appointment.
I did get to meet MilkTruck at the start line!

The heat everyone else has been dealing with has arrived from the mid-west, so this week is a bit up in the air (pun intended). Like mainerunnah, I'll be at the inaugural Old Port Half Marathon aiming for sub-1:40 on Sunday just trying to survive and limp it home. Weather will have a big role in whether that happens.

Had a meeting with a surgeon (gulp) on Thursday, with the following results:
There is a cartilage issue on the backside of the knee cap and the femur (they are opposite each other where the knee cap tracks) that was most likely caused during the downhill trail race. He thinks that surgery would most likely cause more harm than good because it would leave a hole in the cartilage. Said he would consider the surgery if I were not able to run or if the knee was clicking or locking. Recommendations: Continue to ice and use anti-inflammatory medications (thinks swelling is causing some of the discomfort). Minimize running hard downhill Be responsible with increase in mileage Work on leg and core strength to protect kneeContinue to train and at some point go for a hard effort.
So, on we go. Thanks all for the motivation and Holly for keeping the thread going!!!
And you can quote me as saying I was mis-quoted. Groucho Marx

Thanks Holly,
A little late for the party this past week. 59.0 miles, much of it in the predawn hours in Virginia Beach. Thursday morning at 4 am it was 84 degrees with 90% humidity. Glad to get back to Seattle this past friday. Ended up being a cutback week.
