    Mornin' everyone!

Just checking in to let you know that I haven't done squat in the last couple a' days. I did a few miles at racewalking training on Sunday, but the roads were too slick after overnight snow/rain yesterday and today. Beside that, I'm wicked busy (I opened registration for both of our Fall races), and even slept in a bit this morning 'cause I was wicked tired too.

    OK, gotta go.

Have a greta Tuesday, whatever color beer you drink!

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Top o' the Morning to Jay and those to follow,

I had to go out early yesterday morning in the car and went slip, sliding thru the parking lot.  However, by the afternoon, it was sunny and 40, so we decided to run along the Charles, something we haven't done in several months.  Well, the first two parking lots became snow banks where they dumped the piles of snow, so we circled back and drove to an area I knew was plowed.  Froom there we ran, but changed the route multiple times, because of unplowed snow banks.  They were not great runs for either of us, but very pretty in some areas.  However, now I'm giving myself a couple of days off because of knee pain, which I'm attributing to tired shoes - I just bought 2 new pairs, so I assuming pain bgone.

and happy Evacuation day (the day the British left Boston in 1776) and which used to be a Massachusetts government holiday

It is STILL a Mass holiday.   I'm sure the Boston Public Library is closed.   Suffolk County employees get the day off; all state employees in other counties get a floating holiday.  This is thanks to Mayor Curley, who found a day from the Revolutionary War that allowed him to make St. Paddy's a day off.   When I worked for the court in Hampden County, we had a huge spread of food in the back room going all day long, starting with breakfast foods and then the corned beef, et. al, all afternoon.    All the court staff and lawyers knew to come up to our floor (4th).

As for the wearin' o' the green, I happened to have a green race shirt from the Marco Island half I ran a few years ago; it even has a shamrock on the sleeve.........and then there's my skirt.  Interesting about that....

..........just last night I was telling DH that now that I'm running again, my major goal is to run conservatively so I can get to Boston ready to run, so no heavy speed work, just some bridges, only one more marathon between now and then.........so this morning, I went out to run 8 some miles at a nice easy pace, and when I'm just about a mile from home, BAM!   I fall down, tripping on a curb.....

....so I had to pull out a short skirt in order to keep my knees open today.    And the skirt's sorta burnt orange.   SO basically, I'm the Irish flag, a little subdued, complete with the blood of the martyrs and Saints.

Happy day and best of luck to ye all .

        grins,

Aamos - things changed a few years ago.  Unions agreed to this no longer being a holiday. current state employees were grandfathered into an extra personal holiday (two if you include the other suffolk county holiday Bunker Hill Day in june), while new employees don't get that benefit.  the library is open today.  Patriot's Day, remains a state holiday - of course there's some other activity that day also.....

what other unique holidays are there in other states?

One of the oddities we discovered when we lived in RI is that they celebrated "VJ Day." We were dumbfounded.  I wonder if it's still a holiday there.

I am very busy here and with the two hour time difference I'm ready for bed right after dinner.  No running at all this week. I think it can only help.  Spareribs

Shucks!  I did check and the Sec. of State (Gavin) still lists it as a holiday, but obviously it's been gutted.

There's a holiday in Utah in July:" Pioneer Day is an official state holiday celebrated July 24th of every year (Utah Code). The day commemorates the Mormon pioneers passage into the Salt Lake Valley from Emigration Canyon in 1847.

The first statewide Pioneer Day celebration was held July 23-24, 1857."

I ran a very hot marathon there one year as part of the fun.

Will try again from home when I have more time.

                Holidays?

                • Virginia still has Lee-Jackson Day (Robert E. and Stonewall), though that’s dying finally. (I think Alabama has a version of it.)
                • Vermont has “Bennington Battle Day” and “Town Meeting Day”
                • Illinois has “Casimir Pulaski Day” to celebrate a Revolutionary War officer of Polish descent. (Which I only know because Sufjan Stevens has a song with that name and I googled it; it’s real.)

                That’s all I got.

Had a good nearly-11-miler in this morning.

                Be safe. Be kind.

We have Alaska Day and Seward's Day... state employees get those off but nobody else does (that I know of). Pretty bogus, IMO.

Finally a warm up! It was in the 20's yesterday, and is that warm this morning. We'll see low to mid-30's today, and upper 30's tomorrow and maybe 40 sometime this week. Not naive enough to say "it's spring," but it's coming!

I think the only out of the ordinary holiday we have is on 4.20. . . personally I don't celebrate but many do.

6 miles after work today. coach says easy 3 out, tempo 3 back.

I don't think we have any state-specific holidays in Ohio, and even if we did, I wouldn't get them off.  It seems that only schools and state and county employees actually get more than the basic 7 holidays.

I have my annual physical today.  Wish me luck!

75 minutes on the bike to nowhere, watching Nancy Drew.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

It is STILL a Mass holiday.

                        So green communion wine then?

I worked for a while for a Boston-based computer company back in the day (Digital Equipment Corp), and even in the field office here in Michigan "Patriot's Day" was supposed to be a holiday (it was the first time I'd ever heard of it). But usually our management made arrangements to trade it for another day, such as using it for a long weekend for 4th of July or something.

My scan only took about 10 minutes today and cost $125, which I thought was the cost of a hospital band-aid. This was called a "calcium scoring" CT scan and is supposed to give an idea if there is any buildup or atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. It's strictly a voluntary screening test, which is why I paid for it out of pocket. My performance analysis test a few weeks ago was A-OK and showed no EKG irregularities, good VO2-Max, overall 90th percentile for my AG, etc., but I do have a bad family history (father and brother). The issue is that it might tell me something that I really don't want to know, especially if I can't do anything about it. So I agonized a bit over whether to even do it, but if it comes out clear then it will be really good news!

(They said to wear loose, comfortable clothes, so I wore some warmup pants and an old race shirt. The lab tech did a double-take when he came out to bring me back, then told me "We don't get too many people coming in here for this test who are wearing a marathon shirt.")

I exchanged messages with dg (Debbie) yesterday. She's still feeling the affects of her concussion, but is improving gradually and is doing some light TM and stationary cycling. She'll be back as soon as she feels better and has more energy.

VJ Day is still celebrated in rhode island, but it's now called Victory Day.  I loved having the first Monday off in August, when i lived in RI.

Howdy Do - Been a few days since I've been around.  And as usually, I have no idea what's going on in here.

I don't think CA has any state specific holidays.  Our office is closed for a number of the court holidays, and the others are "star" holidays - meaning, we are opened, but only at about half-staff.  If you want to work, you get to take the day off somewhere else.  I always work the star holidays so I can add them to my vacation time.

Yesterday was a rest day, today was 7 miles, not run as EZ as they should've been.

Saw my MAT person yesterday - well, a different person, same place.  My regular MAT guy had neck surgery and was out for another week.

I've been having issues with my low back and right leg.  Anyway, the diagnosis was that my pelvis is turned too far to the right and my torso is turned too far to the left, so I've been given some exercises to try and get things back in alignment.  Spent an hour with her yesterday, and just that one hour made a difference in how my body reacted to the exercises she had me doing.  I've known for a long time that my pelvis gets off quilter - it's from a pretty bad fall I had years ago getting out of the shower - but usually I know what I did to make it mad.  This time, I have no idea.

I am a very big advocate for MAT therapy.  If you have physical issues and you've never gone a MAT, I highly recommend seeing if there is a certified specialist in your area.  Unfortunately, they're not covered by medical insurance yet, but IMHO, it's money well spent.

                              Have a good week ~

I dare you to take the water taxi for the five minute ride across Elliott Bay to Alki Point after work when the setting sun turns Seattle into a city of golden reflections. If you do, bet you can`t refrain from joining the hundreds of sunset runners enjoying the view. Even I can`t.

                                .

Otherwise, since I can`t invite you to a fugu dinner over here, be sure to check out the rusty rose-colored tides this time of the year and go down to the beach to eat as many oysters, muscles as clams as you can.   Also, if the hills of  Seattle are too tough for running, maybe take the bus up to Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill for more sunset views.  It is sunshining isn`t it.  Oh well, there`s always running.
