Tuesdaily (Read 11 times)

Just a regular Tuesday. Holidays are over and back into a routine. NYE, Chowder and I walked 7.3 miles on the course we ran last week in Alexandria and along the Potomac. Yesterday was just a short walk/rest day. Tonight, I'll run 5 ish with the brewery group.

qotd: What has been your least favorite race? Or run? Any memorable ones that stand out? I ran a 10 miler in february a few years ago-- it was a state running group 'challenge'. It was 40 and raining at the start. Continued rain, then downpours, then more rain with wind. I don't remember much about the course because I was trying to not get sucked down by the rain--mentally and physically. I at least had the smarts to pack dry shoes and a full change of clothes to change into afterwards. The same race is coming up in a month or so. I will not run it again.

    yesterday's qotd: TBD

FL trip was good. We did quite a few short drives. Pick a spot on google maps and just go for a drive with dogs. A few good hits. Blue Springs State Park was quite nice, full of manatees, but quite crowded. A little walk we did on the Dunnellon trail was wonderful even though it was a paved rail trail. Felt like we were walking in a swamp. Went to some county park that was on a canal between the Withlacoochee River and some lake with a long name (ending in "ee" of course) that made me want to go fish even though it's not my hobby.

Of course a few drives out through the marshes and to the Gulf Coast. Not really beaches up in that part of Florida but still nice. Had a few good meals out with the parents. Most of the FL water front restaurants in their area (Citrus county) have the same theme.. fried, broiled, or blackened seafood, shrimp, grouper, etc. I always go with the blackened versions. Parents are doing ok for their age, my dad more so than my mom. She sort of limps around with a cane, has vision problems, hearing too unless you say something you don't want her to hear.

I did some running down there but not too much. Just some loops on the Whispering Pines trails.

Sort of settling back to normal now. Ran 7 or do yesterday to start the New Year with Baker out at Nolde Forest. That is pretty long for me these days but included lots of shuffling up the big hills, heck even down them. Jogged Birdie for about 2 miles as well. She does not quite yet understand the beep collar so it was a battle.

Today, need to stretch and do some weights. Maybe go to the gym tonight for a spin instead of running.

QOTD: I've had bad races, weather, tough courses, etc but the one that took the cake was Cheat Mountain moon night madness or something like that.. a 50 mile run in West Virginia in mid to late August starting at dusk. It was basically 30 miles of gravel forest roads up and down the mountain followed by 20 miles of rather horrible trails to run at night. I remember the trails, had big pockets of what looked holes full of water, trees that wanted to grab you, etc. After the first long section of road we could not wait until we hit trails and after a few miles of that we could not wait to hit the road again. A group of us went from the TrailDawgs... they pulled a few of them at the one check point for just barely missing a stupid tight cutoff. Ugh. One good thing about that race is we cruised the downhill on that stupid road to the finish.

I posted in LB's Tuesdaily, but here's my qotd.

qotd:  My least favorites were the 100s that I have dnf'ed which are; Leadville (I then went back and finished it the following year), Hardrock (twice), Ultra Trail Mt Fuji, and Mogollon Monster.  I'm starting to get too slow for mountain hundreds I guess.

        Trails

qotd: It would have to be the 50 I tried at Brazos Bend.  It was December and cold and rainy all day, I tripped on some vines and fell face first into the mud and spent the day covered in it.  I'd flown down specifically to try my first (and last) 50 miler. It was not a fun event.

Nothing for me yet, but I'll get in my regular upper body and core workout when I get home.  I haven't done any lower body strength training, running, or biking since last Wednesday, because I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with ischial bursitis.  I've been taking OTC anti-inflammatories and icing and it's a tad better, but any extra squatting up and down, walking, etc., it gets mad and uncomfortable.

This morning at 8:30, I sent a fax to the doctor who performed my hamstring surgery in 2018 and explained the situation.  A few minutes ago, his office called me and set up a video appointment for next Wednesday (he's 6 hrs. away in the Bay Area).

I can't even get an appointment with my primary for 4-6 weeks to get a referral to the local sports ortho, where it would take another 3 months to get in, unless I would be lucky enough to get in on a cancellation for either places.

Humboldt County is a great place to live . . . unless you need fast and efficient medical care.

QOTD: It was a "trail" marathon a number of years ago in the Monterey, CA, area that was all forest service road and hotter 'n hell.  People were dropping like flies, running out of water, etc.  When I finally made it to the finish line, it looked like a triage center.  They'd even run out of water at the finish.  Luckily, they had medics taking care of people.  I was given a small baggy of ice - which was all they had left - to put on the back of my neck and was asked questions to ensure I was okay to drive.  I ended up sitting in my car with the air conditioning running for quite awhile before I went anywhere.  I was supposed to drive a few hours north to the my brother's house, but I ended up going back to the hotel where I'd stayed the night before and thankfully they had a few rooms available.

qotd: I did the Elkhorn 50k several times and it’s a good race, but one year it got into the lower 90’s (typically 60-70 for highs, often 30’s to start. Anyways it did me in; bailed about 20 miles in- I was really hurting!
