Ultra Runners

Welcome New Members! (Read 1778 times)

yeah I guess part of it is genetics.  I don't know that anyone would state that two 30 min runs are the same as an hour long run, the recent school of thought that I read was that if you're already doing a mid-week 10, there isn't any value in doing another mid-week 10 and there's just as much value in doing two 5's.  That I understand, because you've obviously already got some mileage.

When you consider something like a 20 mile run for your marathon training, if you can't walk for three days afterwards and can barely get through the 20, you're obviously going to be much better off peaking with a 16mi and getting in further quality runs on the days after.  I guess i'm agreeing with you that if your runs aren't quality runs, your form is suffering, etc, you're really not adding much value.

I've read those two schools of thought, and as I'm a preparer by nature I'm going to follow your logic, but try to step up a second day run also.  I don't know if I'll be able to, my focus is on that long run and I figure anything on the second day above and beyond a minimum is going to make the 50 more 'enjoyable'.  Right now a 12 after a 16 is taxing, so I have a waaaaaays to go.

I agree you have to recover from your runs to get the value out of them, but it is a cumulation - Each run has a purpose - it is a stimulous ... so I do not understand the comment "that if you are already doing one mid-week longer run - no need to do another?"

2x5 never = 10.  But if you cannot recover from 2 tens during the week then no use in doing the second.

I just tend to run hard-easy (Hard day / easy day repeat) - Sometimes 2 easy days

Last week the main run of the day was

Last sunday was 32 - so 2 easy days

PS - I would rather do my longest run on a weekday than a weekend.

Hey to all!  I've been lurking about for a while.  Been wondering how to break into ultra running.  Trying to find first a shorter one near to me.  Found Bear Blaster Fat Ass 50k+ yesterday.

So, I must say thanks to WrigleyGirl!

In the other thread you posted Ultra Signup's Hot list and lo and behold there it was.   Just up the way from here.

It's free, close, quite flat.  On nice hiking trails at lake.   Sounds good for a first I think.  The 50k is actually 58k but okay.

The only sticking point is that I'm running a marathon two weeks before.  But what the heck you only live once.

So I signed up and unless I break myself before then I'll be there.

With all the miles you have been putting in I  was sure you were training for a 100. Smile

            A Sweetheart

I bet you won't be as thankful when you are running!  Big grin

I hope you do great.  Fatasses remind you what is really important when racing (hint: it's not the T-shirt).

I would not run a Fatass  for my 1st ultra. You do realize there is little or no support. Re-fueling is a major part of ultras. If you decide to run it let me know.I will signup and run it with you.

Oh I think that it will be okay Clay.

Two out and back portions.  First is 12miles out.  Water at turnaround.  Twelve miles back to cars.

Food and drink in car.  I can carry gu easily.

Then second portion is six miles out six back for total of 36.  The second out and back will have two water drops.  But unless it gets really hot I won't need much water any way.  In March Augusta area doesn't get much hotter than Atlanta if at all.   My husband calls me a camel.  He

needs water even during shorter runs lately.  I do my long ones without MTA at this time of yearSmile

I was going to do 24 H at Ft Benning but will do the Fatasss instead. Will see who I can convince to do driving over and run it. Thanks.

Another lurker checking back in... did my first 50k on Sunday!  Bizz Johnson trail run in Susanville, NorCal.  I'm such a flatlander, the altitude (+5200 ft) was a little tough but otherwise no complaints and it was a good event for beginners like me and DH.   Have a couple marathons coming up but not sure what our next ultra will be...
