Polar Bear Ride
Left home at 12:30 and went to Forestview HS via Robinson and Bud Wilson Rd which added 10 miles to my total. Wore my leg and arm warmers which worked out great. Got to the school and saw Ben and John. Chatted a little, located the registration and heard someone calling the start. Went back to Ben and John and we made our way out of the parking lot. I would guess there were about 100 riders. Some last minute details and we were off. Leaving the parking lot the cars stopped. Like they had a choice with a flood of riders crossing the road. Made our way along Union and turned onto Wilson Farm still in a pretty big pack. You could just see a few breaking away. The group I was in passed a lot of riders on the second half so they were probably the ones that went out too fast. I settled into a pack at a pretty good pace. Looked like we were doing mostly in the twenty's. Saw John and Ben occasionally but didn't get real chatty. Somewhere around half way I went around the inside of a turn too fast and the road was a little rough which made my line swing out a little. A rider had to move out a little and I apologized. For the most part it was just stay in the pace line. We had a double pace line going quite often. On the way back I started noticing less people in the group so I suspect some were being dropped. I wasn't having any trouble keeping up and was surprised to learn later on that John and Ben had been dropped on the hills. Stayed with the group all the way back to the school and circled the lot a few times waiting on some of the others. Ben rode to the school so he probably took the Patrick Rd short cut and went home. Talked to John a little and left before I cooled off too much. Went home by Beaty. The last two hills on Kendrick were a bear. I really enjoyed the ride and was surprised at the average. I knew we had a good pace but I didn't have a lot of trouble keeping up. I don't remember having an average this high on the Wed night rides but the group is a lot smaller so you have to pull more often. Max- 38.5
