Today I ran to Old Farm Road and back for a total of 7 miles. It ended up being almost a tempo run and I'm not even sure why. I started out with a 7:40 mile, then it got quicker and quicker, until I was doing about 7:10s. My 6th mile ended up being a 7 flat and then I used the last mile as an easy cooldown.
I don't think this was fast enough to be a tempo workout, but it was definitely on the high end of aerobic. It was probably right on the border, and I'm not sure how I feel about doing this kind of a run. Maybe this is what people refer to as "junk miles," although I wouldn't necessarily call these miles wasted. For one thing, I always have fun when I run quickly.
