The Mid-Winter Classic 10 Miler...everything went well today. I said before the race that I wanted to go out in 6:15 (NOT 5:45) and then carry 6 minute pace through the next few miles and see what I had in the second half. My original goal (a few months ago) was 57-60, and I was going to aim for 60 since I haven't done the speed work, just the base work. Well, I did go out in 5:45, but then I settled in at that pace for almost the entire race.

Splits: 5:45, 5:59, 5:43, 5:45, 5:43, 5:51, 5:47, 5:56, 5:49, 5:37 (these splits are based off of the Garmin auto lap, which was off a tiny bit but close enough as to not make a difference. It actually stated that the first mile was 5:40, so I folded in the extra 80 feet in 3.6 seconds that it gave me there.)

I felt strong, felt comfortable, ran almost the entire race alone. A pack of a dozen guys (containing 6-8 guys that I am usually competitive with) got ahead of me early, but I passed all of them in 3 or 4 miles and none caught back up. At least one dropped out.

One of my teammates was running the same pace as I was, but was about 20 seconds ahead of me almost the entire race. I closed the gap at the end to 2 seconds, but he still beat me.

I spent the next few hours after the race ended to help clean up. Other than the two race directors, who were tossing the last few bags of trash before they left, I was the last one there. I got to ride in the back of the pickup to get all of the signs and tables and trash along the course. Fun is.

Well worth being out there. About 14 miles on the day with warm ups and cool downs. My cool down wasn't long enough; only 2 miles.
