I'd tried the nuclear option ... I did get the erase all option but as soon as I remove the Garmin from the cradle it switches off again. The device will turn on and find satellites sitting in the cradle, but is dead once it leaves the cradle.

It shouldn't be 'on' while on the cradle should it? Put it on the charger, make sure it is turned off, and just the floating *charging* message shows. Leave it that way for a few hours so it can fully charge up.

It claims to be fully charged.
It really does seem like the battery went from being just fine to completely dead, or the software thinks it did.
