expanding asphalt (Read 511 times)

Gig

Does asphalt expand when heated? It sure seems like my regular routes have gotten longer, and the hills higher in the past week or so. That sounds like the obvious explanation for why I'm slowing down lately.
More likely you must be expanding in the heat and the additional wind resistance is what is slowing you down.

yep, asphalt, like most materials, expands when heated and contracts when cooled. I like the wind resistance theory much better though

it becomes sticky too, so your shoes stick to it like glue when you run. I recommend a good thick layer of grease on the bottom of your shoes.
Barefoot running on hot asphalt ought to nullify the expanding effects of heat

            Jazz hands!

I thought this said "expanding asshat" at first.

Don't forget the air-densifying effects of humidity. It's much harder to cut through that thick summer haze than to slice through the dry winter air.
