Is it necessary to taper for a 3K? My daughter (11) has been training for USATF JOs on December 13th. She's not a heavy trainer, just 20 miles a week over 4 days with a combination of speedwork, Hills, a long run of 5 miles and a tempo. Is there any need to taper this prior to race day? My thought was that you only taper for longer distances and since she's only @ 20 miles per week, there is no need.
Thoughts appreciated.
I wouldn't taper mileage, maybe reduce the volume of speed work from what she's been doing a tiny bit to stay a little more fresh (a rep less if it's >800m, 2 or 3 if it's <600m). But I don't think she'll benefit from cutting mileage the 2 weeks before.
Know thyself.
What Burger said... nothing really to taper from.
However, it would be beneficial, the day before, to do a couple fast accelerations as part of her run. It helps put a little snap in the legs for the race the next day.
