RIP Milkman

When I had my foot injury over the winter, I specifically remember standing over a table and noticing a gut for the first time in my life. I quickly realized that I'm reaching an age where things start slowing down. I'm glad I'm back up to 50+ MPW though so I can continue to eat exorbitant amounts of chocolate chip cookies

Steve - Best of luck with the race this weekend, regardless of how you approach it.

JMac - I can agree with your comments regarding all those Americans. And it is SOOooo nice to have a bit of a break every once in a while. That said, I have been seeing three (non-HS/Jr High age) people showing up at the track. One (who stays the longest) is working her way towards running her first full lap without stopping and the other two have been doing sprint work (100 yards) on the football field. Quite quickly for their size, actually. I've been coming down the home stretch to finish out a 400 and they're going faster than I am. Kudos to them.

Piwi - Congrats on the 8k and the recovery. Is sitting around getting fatter better or worse than running heavy miles and getting faster at the same time?

Rune - Good for you on the beer and taper!

Bro - If that's you, I'd suggest less speed overall (that's clearly not your problem). Slow down the easy and LRs (8:30's or so - 7:30 is close to M pace) and sub in some tempo work - maybe 7:05 pace and longer (1-2 mile to start) cruise intervals with a 1 minute jog per mile at LT pace recovery between.

Good weather again for a tempo run (3mi + 2mi) this morning. I really struggled with my tempo last week (2x2mi + 1mi), so it felt great to not only do well but feel like I could have tacked on another mile or so. Next week will probably be back to our typical summer weather, though.

Good luck to Steve and Mark.

It must be Bro.  The "run 10 miles at 6:30" in training is rather optimistic!  Best case for me would be 5 miles at 6:30 when in 1:26 shape.

        PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

        40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

        2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

Yeah that's clearly a troll post. I think running 10 miles at marathon pace during training is hard. For half marathons, 6 is about my max.

Coincidentally I just ran my best ever tempo!  8km in 32:37 (4:04/km) which is 4.97 miles at 6:34 pace.  It was quite windy too, first 3km downwind, next 5km upwind, so conditions were not ideal either.

In two weeks time with good conditions, 1:25 is a real possibility.

Hmmm sitting round getting fat is bad

Running heavy miles and not getting faster is bad.

Running heavy miles and getting faster is good.

Running heavy miles and getting back to previous best times is good.

Running moderate miles and sitting around getting a bit fat is ok.

Marco - my family has roots in Congia de Botti, nearby Cremona. Food is a religion for us.
Rune- you are overthinking as is usual in the last week. Don't worry you will kick ass, enjoy the race

Keen - if you're getting enough time on your feet on your long run you're golden. Remember elites run 20 miles a day, including their long run.

Steve - what if you jog for 11.1km then race a 10k? That'd make for a good 10k PR attempt having so many rabbits to pick from

Jmac - I agree, not exercising gives me a mental rest, but then I also know how long the road back to fitness is. I can see you had a first date with belly fat. That's cute haha I have had a long relationship with her, only a little break up before my 50k race in 2016.

MJ - I'd be crazy about chocolate too if I lived in Switzerland. Hmmm actually I am crazy about chocolate. But recently I have a trick up my sleeve. Mashed avocado mixed with cocoa powder (not chocolate powder) and honey.
Add Açaí powder for maximum effect!

Watson - that's a great tempo, it must be a confidence builder

Rune-/Jmac/Keen - I often see you guys justifying a workout because it was too warm, poor conditions. Don't worry so much Smile You train by effort.
If the race is on warm conditions you have to downgrade the paces, and if the race is in colder conditions you will naturally run a faster pace. Your body does not know the pace, just the effort

Me - I have anticipated the long run for today as the weekend calls for a trip to visit my second brother. 48k so far and maybe a short jog with my siblings on Sunday.

Flavio - We LOVE complaining about the weather, haven't you figured that out by now?  Then again as I think Watson pointed out, you're the only one with warm weather PRs so you're in the same boat as us.

Watson - Congrats on the tempo, you sound like you are really getting into shape.

Flavio: get out of here! I just so happen to have a ripe avocado lying around - I will do that tonight for desert - sounds delicious. Not sure what I complement the Açaí for since I am not even sure what it is - ist that the natural stuff that you talked about to (....censored...)?

And...I obviously saw your run down to the pier and back and thought wow Flavio is ramping up his easy days - lets see what his long run will look like. Now I know Wink Was relatively fast long run pace though as compared to your easy runs. Like my schedule asks me to run similar easy paces but 30 seconds slower on the long run as compared to you.  It yields at a 100min half marathon. So I guess you run your easy runs slower than what the Hansons would ask you to. But keep the long run in line with the 90min goal.

MJ - The lakefront area has recently been renovated and it’s a pleasure to run there now. I’m sure it will motivate me to run some middle of the week MLR going forward.

You are right, Açaí is a gift from the gods. But don't take my word for it, go here -> https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g188113-d11748907-r501267423-Juicery_21-Zurich.html . You are welcome

Rune and Steve: all the best for your races, guys!!

Re diet - so, I lost around a kg in the last couple of weeks, no idea why, training and diet were more or less unchanged. I was actually a little worried tbh as my weight had been really

comsistent. Anyway, my wife figured it out, which is that once we bought the house, I stopped buying coffees from the cafe downstairs (normally a moccacino) and just got them out of the free machine at work (normally a flat white).

Weather looking pretty good for the race here. Should be around 7-8C at race start in a few hours time, basically no wind, and the rain looks like it’ll hold off until the afternoon. Damn close to perfect conditions, after JMac pointed that out on Strava I realised it would be the best conditions I’ve had since Auckland 2016 which was 12C at the start but warmed up fast when the sun came out. Took me 1.5 years to get close to that time again let alone beat it so who knows? The 3rd quarter of the race will be the potentially slow bit as the path around the lake is narrow and a little uneven in places so that could be the key.

Jmac I have modified my post, sorry. You can delete yours now.

Haha I was just joking, I burst out laughing when reading it, but I will delete it. Don't worry Piwi's post from a few pages back still keeps them away.

Acai is very popular here in NYC. And yeah, Kiwi really is trolling. At some point I'm just going to label one of my runs as "DEW POINT DEW POINT PIWI KIWI DEW POINT" and see what happens to him. Don't worry though, if he had to run in 70+ dew points like us, he would understand the pain.

Mark - You can't dream up better weather. I would pay twice any entry fee to guarantee 7C/45F temperatures for every race I ran in. Basically what I'm saying is you have zero excuse now not to put up a PR . I see a 1:14:43 in your future.
