Sub 1:30 Half Marathon in 2018 (Read 704 times)

watsonc123

Keen - another nice week.  Your streak of circa 60 miles a week with quality should result in a nice PR.

Jamie - I don't know my aim as I only raced twice last year, being a 1:30:06 half after a short period of good training, plus an October 3:16 full with an injury and a cold / sinus infection.  Post the marathon, I ran very little the rest of 2017.  In 2018 I have built to an ok volume with (for me) quite a bit of quality.  But as my training has been different to previous halfs (normally 6x mile weeks with less quality), I don't have a good reference point regarding what shape I am in.

    PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

    40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

    2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

    2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

Roxx and SteveChCh: Welcome mates. Netherlands here.Nice training!

Keen: I seriously envy your treadmill. We are having sunny but bitter cold weather, nice for skaters but horrible for running. Hope your kid is OK. Success next Saturday mate!

Me: 3thd week of my JD 2Q plan.

We are having temperatures below 0°C / 32°F. Fortunately dry but it is causing me some trouble as I struggled to reach my T pace on Thursday and I was the whole week tired as hell. Add to that that I was taking in too few calories (around 1700). I'm not on a diet or so, it's just that on Thursday we had a potluck at work and most of the stuff was salads and so forth... Looking forward at next Sundays HM, not sure if it's because it's a race or because the weather will be "warm" again (thus "kut nederlands weertje" with rain and 6°C).

Thanks for all the welcomes, great community you have here.

Yeah, Christchurch is a nice place to live and run and up until recently I lived 100 metres from Hagley Park which is perfect especially for the speed sessions with wide open spaces and no traffic.  I didn't live here for the big earthquakes but was here for the February 22, 2011 quake for a wedding and made numerous visits to help family.  It was a crazy time and it's still hard to accept so much from my formative years has gone, but it does feel like it's time to speed things up and stop the arguing.

Mark - yep, I went for the Waterfront race because it looks fast and I've run around there before and just love it.  Also because I'm in Australia for another wedding the weekend of the Christchurch Marathon which is usually the fast option, so it's a replacement for that.  If the weather comes to the party it will be nice to do an Autumn race.  Christchurch being early June each year means it's pretty cold by NZ standards although until last year the weather had been perfect albeit with some ice patches.  Last year was cold and wet and the last 5km for me was into driving rain and wind but I don't think that is why I missed my target by 64 seconds, I could feel it slipping before I hit that weather.

Last night was 60 mins with 3x(2,2,4) intervals in the middle which felt quite tough but certainly easier than it did a month ago.  Because of injuries this is a 12 week build up from little fitness and this is the start of week 7.  I'm hoping the shorter build up means I'll hit a peak at the right time with no sliding - last year I hit the wall about a month out from Christchurch and needed 1-2 very light weeks which I think cost me in those last 5km.

I lived in Wellington for a few years, I love that waterfront for running even on the windy days (which is obviously almost every day) which make calm weather seem so easy.

Yeah at this point I know when and how to listen to my body but I can see why someone would suggest adding in another run or 2.  If I can get through this race healthy and my body can cope with the extra mileage then hopefully I can start training for a full or look at taking more than 1 second off the PB although realistically I know how hard I had to work for that PB so I can't expect it in every race (took a bit of sulking after missing it last year to realise that).

Steve - welcome.  I live in greater Wellington.  I used to live in Christchurch, my parents still do.  For some people, the quicker stuff is more likely to invite, than easy runs, but don't take an internet posters advice too seriously.

            Blair - good week.

Do you want to know how you don't work at the same place I do? Anytime food is brought in here for any reason it's very rarely salad...

And thank you. The kiddo is doing ok. The cold hasn't hit her very hard, but it's lasting longer than typical. Hopefully she'll be over it soon.

Keen - I feel a lot less worn out.  It's almost like not exercising at all.  Like a nice long walk Smile  And sorry to hear of the weather - I've been dealing with that nonsense for months. Treadmills get old quickly.  I am so happy to have been outside the last few weeks, at least for the easy runs.

                  Personal Bests: 5k 19:43 (04/2017), 10k 43.24 (10/2016), Half 1:33:18 (10/2017), Full 3:32:47 (05/2017)

Jaime - all good, I've added your race.  It looks like a nice, and probably quite fast, course so fingers crossed for the PR!

Enric - as much as I enjoy cold weather for running, once it gets below 5 or 6 C it can be really tough going as it's hard work just getting the legs to turn over.

Steve- every time I am CHC it always surprises me how long it has taken to rebuild. I can imagine you are all pretty fed up with it! I guess the upside is that the areas that have been rebuilt are actually looking great, some awesome modern architecture. I work for PwC and the new building we are in down there is pretty cool.

The Waterfront Half is being run by Running Events - they run a bunch of other events (mainly HMs and a 10k series around Auckland) and do a great job.  They have really helped to grow and broaden the running scene in Auckland outside of the club environment and the Auckland Marathon.  I believe this is the biggest one they've run and it is great they've got road closures for it.  I run along the waterfront often (normally before work) and it is a great spot for it (as long as its not windy!).

Keen - fingers crossed you and your daughter are over that cold soon.  We have been pretty lucky with our little one, she is almost one and we have only had two colds and one throat/ear infection (which was caused by one of the colds!).

Blair - That sounds about right! I generally have a feeling of being "unchallenged" after easy runs. I think that really helps running workouts hard.
Treadmills do get old quickly! I'm not much of a tv/movie watcher, so I'm trying to find more podcasts to listen to.

Mark - Thanks. DD2 seems to be feeling a lot better today. Her older sister and (most thankfully) the baby seem to have avoided it so far.

I really need to sharpen up on my not-American to American unit conversions if I'm going to stick around here!

Monday was about 11 Celcius when I ran.  Which felt quite cool.  The big challenge with most of NZ is the wind and rain (east coast not so much for rain).  It can get very heavy rain where I am, which really takes it out of me, I will take a dry -5 over heavy rain at any temp.
