Piwi- my wife and I have only been out for 2 meals in the last year (since our daughter was born)!  And one was with a voucher that my parents gave me haha.  It's just too hard when you have a little one (and she is expensive too!).  We could get a babysitter I guess but meh.

JMac - yes still using the same coach.  I did wonder if at some point I might benefit from a change, but after 2.5 years my running is still improving and I am enjoying training as much as ever so clearly it's still working.

RoXX- congrats on the PR, that is awesome news and always very satisfying.  I stopped playing hockey to focus on running and it was a very good decision for me.  Sports like badminton and hockey are largely anaerobic so the energy systems are quite different to distance running.

    Keen - free entry ftw!!

Mick - I agree with JMac re mileage - consistency is king.  It's good to build mileage if you can, but it's more important to be consistent.

I love watching the youtube footage of Rod Dixon in 1983.  Nick WIllis in 2006 is awesome too but one of the most inspiring for me is Kerryn McCann in 2006 in Melbourne - she died 2 years later from breast cancer which makes it even more inspirational.

I did an easier interval session last night and hit some good speeds.  Unfortunately I got a sore ankle for about 100-200 metres, sore enough to make me hobble and slow right down but it went away and felt okay for the rest of the run.  However, it's pretty sore today so I'm icing and hoping.  If it got as sore as it did last night in the race on Sunday I'd be slowing right down or pulling out if it didn't go away.  I didn't do anything to it, it just suddenly went rogue.  I'm going to assume it will come right with the light week.

Also, all the best to Steve and JMac for their races this weekend.  Hope those injuries stay at bay and aren't anything serious!

Steve - weather forecast is looking good at this stage, overnight low of 14C (probably 16-17C by race start), light SW breezes and low humidity.  That ankle might just be a bit of taper madness tbh.

Cheers Mark, you too.  I think it probably is although it feels really sore today.  I'm confident though - this is a better week than leading into Queenstown when I was so sick by this time of the week I didn't know if I'd get on the plane or not.

All I'm really dealing with this time is my mind convincing me I don't have the endurance...if I look at my training stats though they're as good as they've ever been.

Weather sounds perfect, low humidity is key for me coming from the south.  I'd be okay with 5-10 degrees cooler but you can't have everything.

Yeah, a few degrees cooler would be good but with the low humidity, 17-18C shouldn't be a problem.  Apparently it was 18C when I was running at 6am this morning and the temperature was a non-issue.  The SW breeze will keep things cool too - as long as it's not too strong, most of the course is actually quite well sheltered from the SW other than the stretches between Kelly Tarltons and Okahu Bay, and then Fergs Kayaks and the minigolf course on Tamaki Drive which is probably only 1.5km all up.

Roxx I think you will get to 1.35 maybe even 1.30 with a dedicated running program now.

Flavio you raced some random stranger on a training run  we have all been there haha

Keen thats great that you can wear low drop, it has to be better and more natural. I wonder if those of us who cant have naturally tight calves or have developed tight calves through footwear. Growing up here in NZ we could go to school barefoot in summer/autumn up untill about 11 years old, then you had to wear a school uniform.

Mick that great news. they may get there sooner. I get mine after about 5 days here in NZ. Not sure if they come from UK or Australia. Yeah I got the navy blue. Often the " more feminine " colours are on special  so you get stuck with pinks etc. Keep an eye on that site as they can be cheaper. The free shipping really helps. Also note that Adidas and Nike sizing is different ie :Nike UK9 is a US10 but Addidas UK9 is a US9.5 very confusing but basically order in your UK sizing not US !

Mark/Steve looking like good weather for your race.

Roxx: amazing what you are able to do without much specific training. Congratulations on the PR.

Flavio: the optical HR monitor of the Garmin 235 seems to be crap. Its a really nice watch regarding value for money but I guess I will have to wait a bit since I really hate my HR strap (Suunto Ambit S3) and the fact that those guys Suunto are unable to have their devices synch like Garmin Connect.

                    Me:

Very short. I went on a short holiday last week. As I was a bit sore from the Q2 on Thursday I decided to take it as a taper week, thus doing 2. This week I will only do a few shortish runs and a shorter Q with 3x 1 mile T pace. Keep the carbs coming in and prep everything for the Rotterdam Marathon. I'll run with a few friends, two of them first timers, one wants to do 3:20 and the other 3:30. The first is a pro trainer with enough experience and such who has run anything up to 15K and is fast and fit enough. The second is an ultra-runner who has just never run a road marathon. I will aim at 3:30, far from a PR but my aim is set at the Amersfoort marathon  in June.

Well, I'll post a proper RR next week and I will re-read a few of the ones you guys posted as  a way of mental imaging Smile

Good luck and godspeed to everybody this weekend!!!

Piwi - Low drop shoes take some time to get used to. And you have been using high drop shoes for longer .

MJ - Most of the time it’s fine, but the failure rate is way too high. It’s a new tech, I don’t think any of these wrist heart rate monitors are as good these days.

Mick - I had an FR235 for two years and found the optical HR very good.  Overall found it accurate and reliable and almost as good as a chest strap.  One or two minor issues (e.g. could be a bit laggy on hill efforts every once in a while, and others have reported cadence lock which is not something I encountered) but equally chest straps can be susceptible to electrical interference.

Piwi - more feminine colours... you mean like, not blue or black?  Haha.
