PJ- in that case you would love the SF Running Co (Mill Valley) Saturday morning trail runs! If you are ever down here, you gotta go, 8am in front of their store. Not your average "running store" run .... really they are the epicenter of the trail community here. 12-15mi routes with 2k-3k ft climbing, and a TON of super solid runners come out for it. I did those routinely when I was in that brief trail phase, and I was solidly back of pack. They're strong.

Ace - No live tracking, but they'll probably make up for that by having a sweet old truck as the lead escort vehicle!

Matt - I'll likely end up with 65, maybe 70 at a maximum.

      Bun Run 5k - May 4

Thanks folks for the support re missing Boston and now I'm determined to beat the new standards. Good luck to all in Chicago this weekend. I really can't wait for cooler weather here. Highs still in the upper 80's with lows around 75 and humid. Better than the lows of 80 that lasted until a few weeks ago but not exactly ideal. Oh well, at least Houston has amazing food and beer.

          Running Problem

          Problem Child

dwave thanks. you're one of the few people who will be awake and able to track my progress during race day. I'm telling everyone I know out here I hope to be done by "around 10:30" so they can look up results.

keen I saw that hill. I'm sure you'll be hammering it like the end of a T workout at that point. Hopefully you get lucky and that guy you've been chasing all race is right there and you pull him. Just remember....checkers or wreckers, and I quit quitting the very next day.

rune Youre' doing good in training. You're going to continue to see improvements. Heck...I'm looking at some training runs thinking "man...I didn't think I'd be doing that when I started" and I've almost convinced myself the JD2Q plan would work GREAT to PR ANY distance. Keep going and don't let the bad days get you down too much. I hope my race shows you what's possible.

             kichoge-in-Monza weather, but it's great.

you can take CTA (subway) from O'Hare or Midway right to downtown. I forget where you said you're staying, butyou can connect to anywhere from the loop. Also I recall taking a bus to the expo (or, to a few blocks away). Google maps + ventra card are your friends!

No idea what this is in reference to. I'm just a millennial, I don't get these things. $25 Chicago Marathon memorial Ventra cards purchased. On will call at the airport. A coworker said it cost her $45 to Uber to downtown. It's $5 for the L. I'm staying "Near North Side" (according to Google...aka Magnificant Mile area) and the shuttle is a block or two from the hotel so the GOAL is to get there Friday. Saturday is an exploring day/Wendella Boat tour. Oh and if TNF is a "bad" idea....TRT is a MAX idea.

My lunch break was exciting...It started with asking my wife if we had to download the airlines app for tickets...apparently I'M the one who booked them.

So I checked my flight (direct, land at 5:33pm) I bought in May. Turns out the flight was changed and it's no longer direct. Also I land at 9:33pm and leave on the last flight. The downside to this is I won't be able to get to the expo as (goal) plannned. Also,if ANYTHING happens to ANY flight before me I'll (most likely) be bumped a day because it's the last flight. The direct flight was canceled (whole reason I took the 11:30 am flight not the 6:00am flight in May) so everything goes to PHX or LAX. I explain how my flight changed from arriving at 5:30 to 9:30, out of the operators control, and I saw no notification (my fault) so I requested to be moved to the 8:00 flight, add a lap child (not possible online with American), and not be charged because I found out this week it changed. There must be some Chicago Magic (see..I...am?) because it all worked out, PLUS the flight back my mother in law is sitting behind us (smaller plane) and it just cost me my lunch. If the weather is going to stress everyone ELSE out I guess travel arrangements (I feel your pain dwave) can be my stress. I need to find something to throw between Chicago and Magic....there seems to be a reoccurring theme I'm creating.

mid 60s, 40-60% humidity, 20-60% chance of rain, 10(ish) mph winds from somewhere, and possibility of scattered thunderstorms. I think the only thing impossible is a repeat of last year's weather. I'm not complaining. CIM has 50-60% humidity and I've been rained on there (good luck) so you know...I'm just sitting here now focused on deciding between buying Gatorade Gels at the expo, hope for a bunch of free ones, or stock up on GU for race day (trained with Gatorade) because I can buy them locally.

TL;DR: Marathon training, including travel and race day nutrition for out of town races, sucks.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

brew- ha, that's one of the several reasons I don't buy flights way in advance. 6-8 weeks is the sweet spot, where prices often are their lowest (google flights helps track, sends you notifications) and also lower probability of schedule changes. but yes- stressful either way.

that forecast is great! it's gonna be great. you're gonna crush. the end. Smile

Brew - 62 temp, 56 DP is the current forecast: that's perfectly good marathon weather. Not 100% perfect, but even if it doesn't rain, it'll be cloudy which is nice. I've run my last 2 marathons in conditions like that. You'll do great. GOOD LUCK!

dwave thanks. you're one of the few people who will be awake and able to track my progress during race day. I'm telling everyone I know out here I hope to be done by "around 10:30" so they can look up results.

Awake, yes, but will only be able to track the end of your race (and my other friends doing it).  I'm running Army 10 Miler the same day, which starts at 8:00 am my time; 7:00 am Chicago time.  I should hopefully be home by 10:30 am or so (9:30 Chicago time).

I may check a phone at Army, so I can check on you after I finish.

Also, RLK's reference "Kipchoge in Monza" was to the sub-2 project, where they waited until they had perfect weather to run the sub-2 attempt.

11 miles for me today, including 6x800 in 3:05, 3:00, 2:58, 2:59, 2:58, 2:55.  Felt good and controlled.  Then went home and waited for fridge repair guy.  Fortunately fridge repair guy showed up at 8:15 am (window was 8-noon). Unfortunately, he decided in 5 minutes that he couldn't fix it.  So at least I was able to sneak out to the pool before it closed at 9:15 am.

Next repair appointment?  Next Tuesday afternoon (the 9th).  Meaning the fridge will have been dead for two weeks during marathon training.  I'm incensed, and am very close to contacting the state consumer rights board.

I will never buy a Home Depot appliance service plan again.  It's useless.   The cost of the plan plus the cost of my time spent dealing with them plus the inconvenience of dealing with no fridge for multiple weeks dwarfs the cost of paying for the repair ourselves.

                  /vent.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

Ughhh that sounds incredibly frustrating. Sorry, dwave!

This is where I chime in and say that Renter Lyfe is Best*. Our oven mysteriously stopped working and one day later a brand new and much fancier one appeared in its place, while we were at work.

Dwave - Ugh, a failing fridge is no fun! If you are at all technically inclined, look over the repairman's back when the he is there and ask lots of annoying questions. Couple that with a couple of google searches and you will learn that fridges are deceivingly simple (and unless the cooling circuit is in need of repair not that hard to fix.

Brew - Thanks for the encouragement. I'm really excited to see how the JD program turns out for you.  I might also be one of those nuts who get up early in the morning to watch the race on TV. I stayed up for Berlin, and it was worth it! So if I stay awake I will track you, but there is a distinct possibility I might fall back to sleep again after the fast people are done . Also looks like you will hit a pretty good pocket of lower temperatures for your race. Good luck with travel and all that.

CK - Good luck this weekend, even though it doesn't look like the weather is cooperating.

I'm looking forward to my last week of hard workouts (although they might be a step below some of the  previous ones) and then I will be in full on taper mode.

Brew - Glad the travel ended up working out. I didn't know Gatorade gels were a thing - they aren't available around here, so far as I've seen. Must be regional.
That weather is pretty good for a marathon, too.
Oh, and I'm in the same time zone as Chicago, so I'll likely have the race app up to stalk your progress. I wonder if there's a way I can stream the race...

DWave - Sucky situation all around regarding the fridge (except for making it to the pool). At least it's serviceable. A couple years ago I had a deep freeze go out and the cost to repair it were about the same as a new one.

RLK - There are certainly thing I miss about renting, and magical appliance repairs was one of them.

Rune - Thanks, and good luck in your last real week of workouts.

As Rune mentioned, weather is likely going to suck at my race this weekend (~70* temp and dew point), so a PR attempt is out. I'm mostly debating on whether or not to try the workout this race was supposed to replace (1E, 5M, 1T, 4M, 2E), or still just give it all I've got given the conditions and try to come away with a win (assuming no one really fast shows up again). Either way, I'm still eating bratwurst at the end!

FWIW, I think that racing is a skill and it needs to be practiced.  And a race also counts as a workout Smile

That's why I'm still doing Army, though our forecast ain't looking great either (temp 68, DP 66).

As for the fridge repair, it's apparently a broken compressor - not something we can DIY, and the replacement compressor is several hundred dollars by itself.

PJ: Up here in the PNW, there are fairly active good idea communities (bad ideas are marathons and shorter).  For example, the UltraPedestrian Wilderness Challenge here in the Seattle-ish area and Club Fat Ass up in Vancouver.   I don't know of anything exactly like that in CA but I suspect it's there somewhere.  I'd check with the Buffalo Chips Runners (Sacramento) and/or the Donner Party Mountain Runners (near Brew-land).  I know members in each who have 100 mile races on their resume.  Beyond groups, there's self-guided misery.  For example, the Western States RD recently did this outing in Desolation Wilderness (near Tahoe).

DW: Appliances all seem to suck now.

dwave good luck with the Army 10. If they had live tracking I'd spot you. As for Home Depot appliances/service plans (previous employee) yeah that blows. I'd almost call the store and tell them to replace it depending on how long you've had it. A friend had the HD store install flooring....4 times. They screwed up every time and even scheduled him a repair, called him the day OF and said they wouldn't make it out because (insert bullsheet reason here). Hope it works. 2 weeks with no food....I'd call the store and request money for dinner because you can't store food to cook and their plan covers it. Compressor...I'm surprised they actually didn't have one available on the truck.

rlk Renter life is great until the landlord says he will get it fixed/replaced when he can. Glad you have a great one. I have a friend renting who just got told the place is going up for sale. He gets first option to buy...half a mil. I'll look into the Google airplane scheduler. I purchased mine early simply because it was direct, I expected it to fill up fast, and the price was cheap for a direct flight. I'm just happy to not be the last flight. A friend told me they wouldn't just leave me without a flight but I disagreed. They might get me out of town but not TO ORD by the original time...so I'd sleep in an airport for a day or waste a vacation day and travel the day before a race. crisis averted thanks to being nice (uncommon for me) to customer service.

max thanks buddy. I'll look up the DPMR and see who should train me for WS100 in the future. I just need to get off road more often.

jmac I think it's easier to know the 100+ rating instead of having to do math. At least if I know it's a 130-135 it's like a summer training day. Anything below 100 is like "why even run" at this point. Oh and the weather gets less, then more, then less, then more, favorable as the race approaches. Cloudy and breezy with some rain and humidity I can deal with. It's like CIM, but not CIM.

rune DVR it if you can. It's awesome being able to watch the race with no commercials. PLUS you could get your Saturday miles in if you're up that early. A little thing I've learned to appreciate so much more with trying to get 60+ miles with a day off. Oh and you won't see me on TV. I'm kind of a "back of the packer" type of runner. By that I mean I'm going to be drafting everyone and dealing with the excess humidity and heat from runners bodies.

keen CHECKERS OR WRECKERS! screw the workout. PIN IT TO WIN IT. Even IF the "fast guys" (you sub 3 lookin like bastard) show up. CHECKERS....OR.....WRECKERS. There is no try. There is only do.

                                sc I'll take a headwind and sh*ttty k*tty weather if it means I get a 3:03:03.

no tv, no beer, minimal excess sugar, and lower/easier mileage weeks make running boring. I kind of miss marathon training.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.
