Steve - I can't get over the temperature variations in Christchurch. Maybe it's just because Auckland is pretty temperate. That ice would've sucked.
Watson - nice job on Xterra. Looks like some tough climbing in there.
Flavio - might give your core routine a go. I still tend to just use the classic planks.
Fred - the track is mostly well-drained but has a couple of spots that water accumulates if the rain is heavy.
JT - Auckland is pretty temperate in winter, it is very rare for it get below 5C / 40F. It can feel colder than that because of the dampness though. And we definitely don't get horseflies in any season! (good luck with that)
Darkwave - I was heartened to see this article on one of our major news sites over the weekend. Certainly aligns with the points you made a few weeks ago about the historically male-dominated environment meaning that female cycles were barely even talked about as part of training - and even then, not always in a very healthy way. Fun fact, the first few pictures in the article were taken at the track I train on.
Dave - welcome!! I recognise you from the various 20xx in 20xx games.
Kiwis - great to see Ruth Croft won Western States!

"CONSISTENCY IS KING"
I should have mentioned that the steep hills were mainly walked. HR was around 150 BPM on the uphill walks, my HR is lower than average so 150+ is working hard for me.
JT - nice week. I tend to forget to post it, but I do a bit of basic strength work throughtout the week.
Dave - nice week.
Darkwave - nice week. And good luck with the medication, I had to google dystonia.

Mother of Cats
That was a really good read. Thanks for posting it!
Watson - having seen your Strava, I am absolutely not surprised that you walked those hills. 18-22% grade, according to Strava.
Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.
And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Fred - Yeah, I agree with you, the best workout is the one that you can complete.
JT - I also have some back trouble sometimes, but the coach finds out alternative routines I can do that don’t tax the back as much.
I quite enjoy strength training though, this will sound very vain but I feel manly when doing the exercises.
Of course it also helps with my posture, back pain and running endurance, so there’s that.
But I confess I will many times be run down/tired due to a strength training session.
Dave - hey, welcome aboard. 2.5 miles inside a tunnel sounds terrifying…
DW - Is the medicine supposed to act this fast? If so that is very nice!
Cal - Where you at? I miss your direct/assertive advice and comments

Marky_Mark - I appreciate your hat tip to the deadzone of training. FWIW, when I've had a phone on me, it's never managed to quite capture the beauty of what I'm observing, so perhaps you didn't miss out after all (of course, maybe it's just that my phone is old).
This!! I have a phone full of pictures that don't do my memories justice so I stopped carrying it, except on the rare occasions that I want to listen to a podcast.
Dave I love the Mona Fartlek, there's simply no opportunity to overrun any portion and sandbag the recovery, but 5xKM is my goto other than that. Note that if you get clear crazy you can progress the Mona by increasing the "on" portions though I wouldn't as it's hard enough already.
Darkwave I too had to google Distonia, but it sounds like the docs are finally figuring something out and it helped. Glad you're making some progress after so long.
Watson the elevation on that XTerra race is nuts! Well done. Do you powerhike any of that or is it short enough that you just keep running? (nevermind you already answered this)
50 miles
Solid week, I wish I'd got the long run in even just easy but I tried and my body said this is a bad idea. I was very very happy with the cruise miles as the legs just kept feeling better and better and the HR stayed under control even on the last rep. Maybe my fitness is rebounding?

Largely a "what I've been up to" post since it's been a while for me and I'm trying to catch up on all the thread.
A few weeks ago I took a little vacation with DW and didn't run much (50 miles total) and was (gloriously) away from digital communication devices. The next couple weeks (84 & 91 miles) my boss (the only other person at the company who can do what I do) was busy sailing from Denmark to the US and the resulting double workload kept me busy.I also attended an architecture conference in Chicago for work and was able to take advantage of the very flat terrain and better-than-Oklahoma weather to log some miles.

2.5 miles inside a tunnel sounds terrifying…
This was on an unpaved trail in the mountains where they run quite a few point-to-point half & full marathons throughout the year. It's flat through the tunnel but a gentle downhill the rest of the way; people flock there for PRs and BQs. No lights in the tunnel so you actually need to bring a headlamp. My first time on the course; I was not such a fan of the tunnel; my light was not very effective, and with the unpaved surface I was afraid I'd take a face-plant. Plus as mentioned you lose GPS, which makes pacing a challenge. Outside of the tunnel, some beautiful views though!
Dave
I didn't mean to ruin everything by coming back!
Problem Child
RP/Mikkey - LOL I love that interaction!
At least SOMEONE gets it. Thankfully in my life I'm accustomed to everyone else being right about everything and their assumptions can't ever be wrong.
Mikkey I knew you'd not be offended. I'm undecided on my official goal there beyond "buy the jacket and wear it around town as much as possible so people know I'm not from there and haven't ever done this." The cool folks will have jackets from 2016, or earlier. I hope I get to see something pre-2010.
DavePNW long time no see. I will track you on race day for sure. I think you'll do well with the weather in Chicago. I can't offer any 5k workout advice beyond lots of 400m repeats at a ridiculious fast pace. If you haven't downloaded the spreadsheet on the first page give it a go. I've used the paces listed there for workouts in previous years and it has helped. SUB 3:20 OR BUST!
dwave tight pants vs shorts seems like the most runner appropriate way to describe things. I instantly understood what you were feeling. I'm happy it's getting better.
JT a running partner told commented to me, to my displeasure, about how hard it would be to run after work and how tired he is. He was doing 2020 "marathon training" on lunch and kind of complaining how he would have to blah blah blah. I told him "tell me more about how hard it is to marathon train while working from home with a teenager." He had a dumbfounded blank stare when he realized I've done this 6 times and had to do what he says is so hard, with a kid at home. You just force yourself to do it. It's something I've learned with the run streak I have.
Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Your rectangular running patterns offend me.
RP - English is my second language so I might be missing something, but to me that was very light friendly banter. In Brazil it was very common to take the piss at your friends, things like bitch, bastard, son of a whore. In fact, the nastiest the curse word the closest the friend.
Jmac/Keen - I'm okay with Keens rectangles, but they don't compare to Steve drawing houses and Piwi drawing hearts 😁.
flavio you were correcct
keen I too am offended by your rectangular running patterns. Please refrain from 90 degree turns. It is 2022. 90 degree turns are the old way, and you must replace "90 degree turn" with "roundabout" due to efficiency.

OK - deep breath and I'll take the plunge.
Timing is everything. This thread was known, fairly or not, to occasionally have some heated exchanges. Then the merger happened and almost immediately afterwards, the folks who came here without knowing the background of who's who and who gets along were greeted by a post including term often used in a derogatory manner, followed by someone calling out that usage. How are the new folks to know whether it was friendly banter or a flare up of some sort? In retrospect it may have been nothing, but the first impression wasn't ideal. I get, now, that it may all have been in fun, but that wasn't clear to the new initiate at the time. Had we all been in a room together, I'm sure the tone of voice and facial expressions would have made everything clear, but alas the forums aren't good for conveying the non-verbal communication.

Everyone knows rectangles are a sign of colonialism (hey I can get a job on CNN now… )
I thought the RP/Mikkey interactive was gold and pretty tame by Internet standards. I actually think things are much more likely to run smoothly if we keep the discussions/arguments to running rather than arguing about the arguing
