2020 Marathon Training and relevant COVID 19 discussion echo chamber (Read 700 times)

There is a single race that defines me.

    is that bad?

    Stop monkeying around

Come all you no-hopers, you jokers and rogues
We're on the road to nowhere, let's find out where it goes

Awesome, so you’re friends with Gerry, Peter and Sherman. I love those guys. Very classy guys, I have nothing but respect for them. Peter, Mark...

Well, I know who they are, but I socialize with slower folks who are in my group for workouts.  (e.g. Gerry got AG%=94 the other day for 1000m.) Also, 5BoroRunner (David Alm) is in the club, if you remember him.  Also, CPTC is so big it's split into different divisions (road, track, sprints)  - with different coaches.  Most of the speedier people are in the track group; I'm in the roads division.

      Ntown Kevin - I pm'ed you

I don’t understand how a single race could ever “define you” unless you never raced again.

Exactly.... But don't contradict him - I think Nimmals thinks it's a phrase that will change you as a runner forever - so, let him say that motto until he gets tired of it...

Not to throw this thread off track but I was laid off for 8 months beginning in 2018. Not until I was out of there a couple of months did I realize how much the toxicity of that place took its toll on me. Even with the stress of being unemployed my mind and body were in a much better place. I had learned a hard but valuable lesson. Congrats on the new job, Mike.

mikeymike & mr finn:  This totally resonates with my life the past year, in terms of the toxicity of where I work.  Fortunately for me, the source of my toxicity is retiring in about four months, so I am hopeful things will get better.  Best of luck with the return, mm.

Cal -  I agree, the “don’t let a race define you” is nonsense when you can just go out and run another race. Btw, are you the unfulfilled ultra runner talking gibberish that he’s referring to???  Well I still respect you, buddy.

Joann - You are welcome on this thread and I hope more RA veterans show up this year so that it isn’t the usual RWOL clique!

i f’d up baystate so bad...having mikeymike and Greg(? I think) watch me walking on the last bridge....so embarrassing. But whatever, there’s always another race. I agree marathons are stoopid. But even those you can always do another one. Takes a little longer. But there’s always another one. Until there isn’t.

That was part of a larger point. I’m not going to rehash.

There are a million roads to Sears Target. If you read the entire original post and think about it and you’ll understand it. If you’re part of the herd you won’t. Don’t concentrate on the parts targeted to Ivan Draggo. That was a dig on a NAH...

Thinking should be done first, before training begins.

Yeah, we're actually communicating the same thing. I'm just saying it in a more relatable, simpler, and shorter-winded way.

For those (like me) who missed it the first time around, this video is mesmerising! Thanks for posting it, Nimmals.

I would also love to go sub-3 over 50... last time I did (or really raced a marathon) I was 49. But I think now I would have a hard time with the speed work required. So, I will stick with my ultra hobby jogging for a while longer. Good luck!

Paging CalBears. Has anyone seen CalBears in the area? CalBears party of one two your table is waiting.

Is that OSR race sanctioned, or just a bunch of runners blocking the street? Caution do not try this at home. Amateur hobby joggers on an open road.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

So...at our team track workouts, it sometimes seems that people get nervous before the workout - especially those who are new to the group.  When it seems like things are really tense, I'll sometimes joke: "remember guys - the splits we hit today are reflections of our personal worth.  This is serious business."

That usually makes people smile.  They relax.  They have good workouts.

And it's not because anyone actually truly explicitly thought that the splits they hit were reflections of their value as a person.  But rather, that sometimes we forget that those splits do NOT reflect on our personal worth.  It's an insidious, subconscious thing.

I think Nimmals is making a similar point.  It's not that anyone actually thinks that one race defines him or her.  But it is very true that sometimes we forget that the race does NOT define us.  And it's good to be reminded of that.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Btw, I saw my PT today and he said that you don’t need to be in a boot after shockwave therapy as it’s non invasive. 👍

You're not one of those groups where people need to have a specific half marathon qualifying time to run with the fast kids are you? Is Jane Seo, Huffington Post lifestyle writer and food blogger, part of your team?

I learned this week what it's like to be the fast guy and have someone trying to keep up with you thereby running THEIR workout too fast. I never thought that was a thing even though I've read about it multiple times.

I'm absolutely defined by my 2019 downhill marathon. I'll admit it. The sad thing was the club I was trying to be part of dissolved as soon as I was able to join.

Paging CalBears. Has anyone seen CalBears in the area? CalBears party of one two your table is waiting.

Not sure what you mean but running sub 3 in 50-54 age bracket is not a big deal - at relatively small CIM marathon I ran 2:59:38 and was 25th. Sub 3 at 55-59 AG would place me 14th and in 60-64 AG sub 3 would bring you just 2nd AG Smile I am pretty sure mikeymike knows about it better than me. I started running late, so, I ran sub 3 in 40s, in 50s (will definitely run sub 3 in 55-59 AG as I am 55 for the next CIM and 2021 Boston), not sure about 60s, of course - too far and too unpredictable at this point of life.

Not sure why we discuss Nimmals's motivational phrase at all - it's like saying "do not failures discourage you" - it's a common sense, you do not need to tell people that sugar is sweet and healthy water is clear. Robbing a bank would probably define you for the rest of your life, becoming a president would probably define you, but not a freaking race - why it's even in a discussion? It's absurd! Nobody even thought about it but for some reason Nimmals thinks we all are from a herd and that would impress us for a long time. Ridiculous... I  think Nimmals needs to start training representatives of different gender - maybe he will understand then, that those are more thick skinned than his usual audience.
