2020 Marathon Training and relevant COVID 19 discussion echo chamber (Read 700 times)

Work is having a big meeting to go over how we are handling COVID-19. Yeah, you read that correctly. People aren't supposed to be together in groups of 10 or more, and we're choosing to hold a department meeting over sending an email everyone could read at their desk...including from home.

Hopefully they are cramming you all together in a too-small conference room.

Was the old RWOL just like this thread was a few pages back where people have petty grievances against one another and have to get the last word in? If so, pass.

No, I think you would be just fine in that RWOL community - it was a little spicy but totally great! What was few pages back was too personal, aggressive and totally unreasonable - that wouldn't go that way in old RWOL because there were plenty of people who would express their wise opinions and common sense would prevail.

Our work asked all the employees to work from home, so, for the next 3 weeks we are all working remotely.

It was a large one. Eerything could have been covered in an email including "you're to come up with a plan on how you'll do your job while you're not here." My question was "so do I have to still work the same hours or can I start working around 5am when I wake up?" apparently it was assumed I'd keep the same hours. I don't see a need to wait for 2 hours to start my day when I can eat breakfast in the office. It means I can get stuff done 2 hours earlier and my boss isn't a morning person. Plus I grew up with a parent who worked from home and regularly was working 3p-8p

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Well it all depends on your job and how much you need to interact with people. If you’re working 5-2 and everyone else is 8-5, that’s 3 hours when no one can reach you. I’ve always worked in organizations with some flexibility on hours, and it’s good to allow people that, but it can be a PITA to coordinate meetings etc. around everyone’s schedules.

I really only need to interact with my boss and she just needs to review stuff. I don't need to have much interaction with people which is probably a good thing for the public. I'm the guy who just wants to show up and do work until there isn't work to do at which point we wait for more work.

Oh yeah, marijuana shops are considered a pharmacy so they're essential. They stay open. Just imagine if liquor wasn't considered essential and stores didn't get resupplied for three weeks. Prohibition 2020.

Well it’s interesting because liquor stores are closing for states where it is regulated, but in the majority of states you can just buy in grocery stores anyway.

                Mother of Cats

I've always let my team pick their own hours (I see it as part of their compensation).  I very much prefer if we don't all work the same hours, as it means more time each day when _someone_ is at their desk.  If one guy works 7_3, and another 11-7, that means I have 12 hour coverage.  Win.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

If I follow Mikkey's advice and concentrate on a positive side, I can see I finally can just run, whatever I can - not caring about workouts or trail running and ascent - just miles. But there is also a negative to it right there - JMac will scold at me saying that if I run many miles I need to target sub 2:40 at least - otherwise it just makes no sense...

No no no, extenuating circumstances, plus you’re not in your 30s, plus you’re not targeting a fast marathon time. Very, very different. You get my A+ approval: running is going to be the only thing keeping us sane, if they allow us out the door. If that means 120 miles, go for it. Plus you train for ultras. But if you come back after all of this is over and say you’re ramping up to 500 miles a month just to break 3:00 in a marathon, then yes, I will scold you

Marijuana provides too much tax money to the State. The governor is taking the money for education and you have to pay those teacher (unions) salaries and build more schools.

JMac His ultras have been canceled. He's doing it to piss everyone off.

cal keep on truckin. How are you handling schools being closed until the end of time (end of april, correct?)? Did they send kids home with work to do, or is the State figuring that out now? Locally the Governor said schools are closed an additional week and kids are still required to get the work done.

Nimmals:  I think you posted on the dilemma of closing schools, and the additional stress put on health care workers.  Here's a hopeful solution...

                          https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/03/15/health-care-workers-prepare-for-covid19-medical-students-pitch-in-on-homefront

OMR that's great, I hope it spreads faster than the virus did. Its important we pool together to help out even on my Peacock team we have medical professionals and teachers and the teachers have offered to help babysit the medical professionals kids if they are required to do extensive over time. It really helps when we act like an extended family and Im glad to see the students step up. It reminds me of 911 when people step up to help with rescue and recovery. I lost a few friends from cancer who volunteered at the site. including my GF's uncle who died from cancer and left young kids.

MaryMark Sorry to hear about the Silent Scar. Its very common but its something you don't realize how prevalent until it actually happens to you. That happened to me in 2004 my 1st child a baby girl. so I know how your brother and his wife feel. They actually bathe and swaddle the child so you can spend sometime with it. In the past when the parents never got to interact it left an often emotional scar. Now  they provide the option to help the parents heal. Otherwise the parents suffer a silent agony over never having the opportunity to grieve. We did memorial urn in a local cemetery and the number of babies and ages breaks your heart but I still visit. it helps and it keeps everything in perspective.

Rovatti be well hopefully you are not affected and test come back clean. My team is full of medical professionals one of whom is pregnant and she was in such a bad situation she visits all hospitals and works in the field installing devices she is always in and out different hospitals 6 members of her team are now positive so she got pulled from the field. I also have a stroke neurologist she takes calls during workout because she is a tele stroke specialist. So we know how hard and difficult your jobs are as you are all on the front line. Im going  to run loops with her now because she has to be in he house in 5 minutes f there is a stroke so we will be doing 1 mile loops around her house.  So sending positive vibes your way hope you and the wife stay virus free and healthy.

Taking a break from the weeklies.

I think I got written up for going into the office. So now I'm working from home they told me not to come back but there are certain things I prefer to do at work. Ive always wanted to work from home now I hate it but its not so bad when I have local appointments but sucks on a daily basis.

Wishing all of you a safe and healthy cycle as we buckle down for the real onslaught. Be safe be positive and we should all pull through with our loved ones.

Thinking should be done first, before training begins.

Well I managed to string 3 good weeks together in a row!!!  My heel is never going to be 100%....so I’m not going to put any unnecessary strain on it if all races are cancelled. My PT is telling me that now is a good time to up my game with the strength training (which is what I’m planning on doing). My gym is still open, but they’ve made sure that nobody is closer than 2m apart (more space between TMs etc) and classes have been cancelled.  I’ve never considered myself a true runner or lover of the sport....it’s the races and challenging myself that motivates me.

In other non running related news...I’m playing my first game of golf in about 3 years at the weekend....FORE!!!!!!

You know I agree with you on the first part, although I'm starting to appreciate running more in these chaotic times just as a stress relief when you're basically under home arrest. But I think I would run more like 30 miles a week if I did casually. Enough to clear my mind, and not so much that it's just dragging on. Also probably the right amount for health: 80 miles a week that I'm currently doing cannot be the healthiest.

On the second part, have fun! Golf is a great sport for social distancing, but I have a feeling they will feel the pressure to close too.

Mikkey: could you  please remind me why you don't like Berlin. I know I asked before but it wasn't clear. Just the overall vibe? Maybe at some point we can return to the normal absurdity of how we fill our free time.

Nimmals: have you run Berlin before?

So many are affected that people don't realize unless they're in the situation. I left work in the ER a couple weeks ago to go back to oncology. A lot of these patients are in a tough situation because they need chemo to treat their cancer but that also puts them at greater risk of not being able to fight off infections. And us healthcare workers now have a limited supply of PPE that we would normally wear to prepare and administer the chemotherapy to protect ourselves. Reusing gowns, masks, etc that we normally would not.

                                Bytheway, fuck the airlines.
