RIP Milkman

Mikkey - What was your NYC marathon time again? Asking for a friend.

Mikkey - What was your NYC marathon time again? Asking for a friend.

So your friend is Flyrunner who’s determined to beat my NYC time??  I get it!

Looking at the official site I ran a 1:27:43/1:32:04 split for a 2:59:47 finish.

      5k - 17:53 (4/19)   10k - 37:53 (11/18)   Half - 1:23:18 (4/19)   Full - 2:50:43 (4/19)

Mikkey would've run even splits, but he stopped to schmooze with me in the Bronx...

Yep I did stop briefly to thank Rovatti for holding up a Go Mikkey sign which was much appreciated in a sparse area of the course!

Marky - Good luck this weekend!

Jmac - I have run Chicago twice. I did the meltdown run in 2007 and then a colder version in 2009. The weather is really tricky there and in early October it can be all over the map though it seems the warm years outnumber the cool ones. Here is some historical data:

            http://findmymarathon.com/weather-detail.php?zname=Chicago%20Marathon&year=

Chicago is a top notch race and a fast course for most. There is great support and terrific logistics with the start and finish in the same area.

I think most folks think that Twin Cities has more reliably good running weather though I haven't done that one.

            Marky_Mark_17

Thanks all for the support.  The weather forecast is looking reasonable - temps probably 14-16C (high 50's F) with a bit of cloud around and NE breezes.  Will go for a light jog tomorrow and then we're ready to roll.  Getting to the start on Sunday is nice and easy - 5 min drive to the bus station then a 20 min bus ride to the start line so I probably have the relative luxury of a sleep-in until 4am although no doubt I'll wake up before that.

There was some talk of humidity but the forecast dew point during the race is 12C (54F) so that looks OK - probably just our top-notch NZ media resorting to the usual tradition of over-dramatising the weather when there's nothing else to talk about.  Even if it's worse than that it won't be a shock to the system after running in Noosa last week where it was warm and humid most of the time!

Last race: Runway5 / National 5k Champs, 16:22, National Masters AG Champ!

Up next: Still working on that...

                Jmac11 - Good work, I don't think he suspected a thing!

Mikkey - It would be an honor for me to beat your time, I'm a year younger than you were last year, but 10 lbs heavier.   That's not a positive thing, however, I just secured a pair of the those Nike Vaporfly 4% just for the added advantage to overcome my bigger self.

It's always a challenge to get a good gauge of my fitness in the fall, especially coming off a warm summer training cycle with two fitness indicator races on warm, high humidity days,  HM - 1:26:36, and 15K - 1:00:13, both say I'm in about 3:02 shape. I'd believe the heat/humidity adjustment puts me in sub-3 shape, but just how far below is big question mark. We'll see what the NYC weather is on race day.

Great week Fly and looking forward to tracking you and JMac on the great NYC app! I’ll be interested to hear how you get on in those Vaporfly shoes!

Does anyone know if my old buddy Squirrel is running it again? Just don’t take any pace advice from him as he normally blows up at 5th Ave...or DNFs at aroud mile 18 and gets a cab home.

                    RIP Milkman

Fly - Big week 3 weeks before. It's obviously too late now, but I'm starting to feel fresh at this point and worrying that maybe I should have went for a 2 week taper instead of a 3.

TN- Thanks for the info on Chicago. It seems like such a great race to do as I prefer big marathons with lots of crowd support, but the average high that time of year is 68 or so. Doesn't seem great, I don't understand why they don't just move it back. I guess to not compete with NYC as a fellow marathon major?

Mikkey - Good question on Squirrel. I figured he wasn't since he was injured the last time we saw him over at that other place. If you know his real name, you can search here to see if he's still registered to run, and then track him the day of: http://liveresults.nyrr.org/e/NY2017#

Mark - Once again, good luck. Hourly forecast looks like you might be dealing with a touch of humidity, but Temp plus DP still under 120. Not perfect conditions, but certainly good enough to have a go at it since you did some heat training last week.

                      RIP Milkman

I’m trying to track Mark but either the race is very delayed or it’s not working. I will update if I start getting results.

                        RIP Milkman

                          App is up and running.

                          5K: 20:16

                          10K 40:43

Pretty even splits right around 6:30 per mile. He said he wanted to come through the 10K mark around 42 so he’s definitely way ahead of pace. Hopefully it’s a sign of a fast time coming!

                          5K: 16:37 (11/20)  |  10K: 34:49 (10/19)  |  HM: 1:14:57 (5/22)  |  FM: 2:36:31 (12/19)

JMac: Thanks for tracking. I think it's a good sign he is faster than he planned through the early part; I think he said the first part is quite hilly. Could be setting up for a big negative split.

                            2:52:16 (2018)

Go Mark. Yeah the 2nd half is flat. I think he may have a tailwind for the last 10k today.

A bit of a slowing trend here in the second 10K. Hopefully it’s just that he’s settling into a groove now after going out a bit too fast. Currently on pace for 2:54. Weather is a minor concern with temps at 61 and dew points at 58, so not ideal but manageable.
