forecast is about 68F with 87% humidity and a dew point around 64. I don’t know what all that means other than 5ks suck and aren’t fun.

For a longer race, that combination could be a problem, especially for someone used to a dry climate.  For a 5K, it shouldn't have that much effect on the amount of suckage.  Good luck!

      Also good luck, darkwave!

Took a sort-of down week, keeping my tempo and long runs normal but only going 6+ miles instead of 9+ on my recovery and regular days.  Podium Runner had an article saying that 10 warm-weather runs is sufficient to acclimate, and I’ve picked up two, using TDP 140 as an arbitrary cutoff.  Thursday’s long run was at TDP 142, which won’t feel like much later in the summer but took a bit out of me since I’m not used to it yet.  The shorter recovery jog Friday must have helped, because my easy pace Saturday averaged 20 sec/mile faster than usual for two days after a long run.  It’s still taking me 3 or more miles to get the cobwebs out of my legs and settle naturally into a steady/easy pace.  Good thing I’m not looking at any 5Ks.

        Sun - 7.8 miles in park including 3 @ 6:53

Mon - 6.2 miles slow recovery (1:06) on treadmill

        Weds - off

        Thurs - 14 in park @ 8:36, TDP 142

Fri - 6.2 even slower recovery (1:08) on TM

        Sat - 6.2 in park @ 8:27

RP - congrats on the 5k!  Helluva long way to travel for a 5k... glad it was worth it!

Watson - well done on the XC.

Zebano - good stuff on that triathlon race.

Piwi - solid week, hope the weather wasn't too bad down your way.  I managed to dodge most of it apart from some wind yesterday.

James - keeping very consistent on the mileage, well done.

Me- another solid training week.  Thursday's hill repeat workout came out surprisingly quick.  Had to work for it on the track on Saturday with some wind around (again! that's 3 track sessions in a row...) and felt it a bit on my long one this morning.  Decent week in the bag though.

              Problem Child

Thanks everyone. I think the race went well. I started out WAY to fast. It had a downhill start and I was at the Dont and saw a 4:30/mi pace and it took about 1/4 mile to dial in goal race pace. The start had a 90+ degree left turn that was wet and had some bumpy surface (i think it is an ADA thing) so I wanted to be away from people for the turn. It rained the night before and there was some puddles around so I was worried about slipping at the start. I got into a small pack of 4-5 runners by mile 1 and surged ahead for the turnaround (shirt 90 degree dead end with no cone or arrow marking WHERE to actually turn around) and headed back. Heart rate was getting high, and I was keeping pace (6:17) through mile 2.5 then it started getting harder. Heart rate was 180-185, pace dropped to a 6:30/mi going up this little hI’ll, I had to mentally hold on to fourth place and dug deep for the finish when I saw 19:23 on the finish clock. 19:33 official time. It’s a PR and the 5x1,000 gave me a goal pace to aim for. I really wish I could have been faster today even with it being a PR. It tells me the JD program worked great and I got the data I was looking for moving forward. Six months is a lot of time to keep improving on something (lactate threshold?) and it was a good reminder of running MY race. Lots of people went out too fast for the first mile and I got passed a little after mile 2 by a kid who was 13 and ran a 19:14. He was second overall.
                The winner was sub 17.

I was 4 seconds away from 3rd and just ran out of real estate

                Garmin gps splits are 6:16.9, 6:19.3, 6:30.3, 27.4.

heart rate was 183-186 starting at minute 6 of the race. Peaked at 189 according to the wrist HR monitor. It felt like it too. Kinda had a cramp/stitch after the race on my right side near the ribs on the front of my stomach/chest area.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

RP damn nice job and savour those PRs.

But what we really want to know is how was the high school reunion 🤔

Mark nice work this week and way to finish with that long run. I ran pretty much the Taupo half course from my motel in reverse. Had a 20 min work call the night before at 2am so was feeling pretty average but the rain stopped just before I left the motel and after a few 5 to 5.30kms I finished strong 💪 😌

My week was ok, ended up missing Wednesday as life got in the way, and cut short Sunday due to very wet weather.  I'd got saturated watching a daughter playing football in the morning, and was getting saturated again on my run, so I bailed.

Piwi/Mark - nice weeks, very consistent as always.

RP - Awesome PR. With fresher legs no doubt you’d be around 10s faster. Also, the conditions were horrendous IIRC with 68F and high humidity, I run around 90 seconds slower in that weather for the 5k.

me - week cut short due to a throat inflammation. I so wanted to title my last run in Italy "Arrivederci Italy". It wasn't going to be.

I'm feeling better today, no more inflammation nor fever, but still not 100% so taking today and tomorrow off and hoping to be back at it by Tuesday.

Congratulations, RP.  Great to get a PR.  I usually like it when others start out too fast, as I don't feel as tired when passing them as I do when I'm running alone.  It splits shorter races into three parts - not getting trampled while settling into a pace, passing everyone who started way too fast, and the hard part.

flavio - That sucks, and not a great way to end your time there.  Hope it comes right and you enjoy the travels.

watson - Nice race.  I don't blame you for being over getting soaked.

Mark - Nice week, that's about your sweet spot for mileage right?

piwi - Another pretty big week!  You must have recovered really well.

James - Another nice consistent week.  I wouldn't be too worried about speed, that will come pretty easily with the base you're building.

darkwave - Great race by the looks of it, very nice pace, looked very consistent all the way.

me - My biggest week yet and first time raising the bat for 3 figures. I had my longest midweek run and longest ever run during the week.  Given that it was a stressful week, I'm pretty happy with how I got through it.  One more big week ahead, which will see about the same mileage and what looks like a pretty big MP workout on Saturday.  I managed to see my coach on Friday after cancelling earlier in the week when Mum went to hospital.  He's pretty happy with how I'm tracking and wants to keep a close eye on each run just in case the stress of life starts impacting the training.  So far so good though.

We have major flooding in Christchurch today with the huge downpours of the weekend.  I avoided the worst of it on Saturday thankfully and it was just starting in the last 30 mins.  It would have been miserable to be soaked for nearly 3 hours but as it turned out it was perfect running conditions.  Yesterday was a different story but that's okay for a short recovery.  Had to avoid floodwaters a few times and it reminded me of lockdown with how few people were out.  Actually, it was even quieter because during lockdown people were always out walking.

Steve - congrats on the century!!  I remember the first time I hit that, it felt like a really big achievement.  To be honest it still does!  I hope the flooding has not been too bad near you.  Certainly around Ashburton and other areas it looks very serious.

Corey - I saw on Strava you've been trying Maurten products.  They are a bit more expensive but I've found both the gels and drink mix to be excellent.

Watson - good week.  I can deal with running in the rain but standing around watching kids sport in the rain is WAY harder.

Flavio - ugh, hope you feel better soon.

James nice week you have been really consistent with the miles.

Mark nice week, I remember the discussion, I guess it's been several weeks ago now on gels and thought I'd give Maurten a try.  I've tried Maurten drink mix but had never taken the gels, they worked with no stomach issue.  Every gel I have every taken before has cause some issue and had just written them off. I think I'll stick with these and try to actually use them in my next race when ever that is.

Piwi nice week, that sucks missing stops and starts on the watch. I hate when I've done that.

RP way to go on the race and PR

Watson nice week, sucks getting rained on, I try to avoid it when ever I can. nice job on the race again!

Flavio Sorry you're not feeling well hope you are better, soon when do you arrive in your new locale?

Steve  Congrats on the big 100k week, good luck with the followup week and the MP workout

DW really nice job on the race!  Congrats

For me another good week even taking out the few miles of walking in the neighborhood I ended up with just over 34 miles. this makes 2 weeks in a row above 30. plan to stay 30-35 for the next little while.

I incorporated some faster pace work in my longer run yesterday and over all it went well, I tried the Maurten gel with no issues so I will keep using them when I do a long workout. This was the 1st time in a little over a month that I have added any kind of faster pace work, I've mainly been just running easy pace stuff. I'm still planning on racing the 1 mile  Aug. 27th so still another month or so before any track workouts begin
