Keen - helping parents/grandparents for free does not count 😁The reason I'd find those jobs was so I didn't have to help my dad at the farm, farm work under the sun is very hard and I'm very lazy πŸ˜‚

Piwi - LOL yeah, me and my siblings all work with software development. Nobody is ever suntanned in the family photos

Tons of Brazilians would go to New Zealand to work picking Kiwi fruit and apples back in the day. I suppose not as many these days...

For me it was the standard paper run when I was really young, then graduated to collecting subscription money (how quaint) when I was 13-14 which was 3.5% of what I collected.  I'd usually spend 5-6 hours getting enough to get $30 on a weekend, because I had to keep going back if people weren't home or didn't have the cash.  I met some "interesting" people.

When I was a bit older, 17-20, I got a job umpiring social indoor cricket at the centre I played super league for.  Sounds pretty cruisy...but it was $12 per game that went for 1 hour 15 mins, and usually involved non-stop abuse from a bunch of 40+ overweight average cricketers.  Topped off in winter by the stadium being absolutely freezing but I could only wear one glove as I needed my other hand for the scoresheet and small scoreboard buttons.

In other news, I have been getting significant chest and back pain since Monday night, enough to keep me awake most of the night.  It feels like bad indigestion.  Then last night I developed a rash on the chest and back where the pain is.  I have a doctors appointment this morning and Dr Google is telling me Shingles is the likely diagnosis, and internet research, always the best option, has some pretty grim forecasts for how long this pain could last (3-5 weeks being about average).  I did my first post-race workout yesterday and that was the only time all day I wasn't in pain.  My recovery run didn't feel great today and checking heart rate data, I was around 170bpm at 5:24/km pace....oh dear.  It hasn't been that accurate lately but that ties in with how I felt and definitely indicates a problem.  Ibuprofen reduces the pain slightly but it was hard to focus on work yesterday.  The doctor may prescribe anti-virals and some pain medication, which hopefully makes things more bearable.  I'm not going to panic but there's a chance this messes up training until Christmas which could well mean a reassessment of races next year.

Steve - sorry for your health issues.  At least it happened now and not a month ago.  Which indoor cricket venue did you umpire at?  I played at City, and also played inter-club.  So you possibly umpired me.

I played for Canterbury Sports Court.  Most of my umpiring was social but I did some junior stuff on a Saturday before my game too.  I played a mixture of Prems and Section One after I graduated from Under 17s.  The Easter Colts (under 20) tournaments were my favourites, we finally won it in my last year.

Steve - bugger!  That doesn't sound like a lot of fun.  A week or two off isn't gonna hurt you especially in this post-race phase.  I had a week off around this time last year and it actually worked out really well.  Hope you come right soon.

I umpired hockey (field) for a few years too, club premier level and national tournaments were quite fun but the "social" summer 5 a side competition was the absolute worst.  There's just no upside to it.  If you have an awesome game and call everything right and all the players enjoy themselves, you *might* get a thankyou.  On the flipside, everyone is all over you as soon as you get something wrong and there'll always be at least one or two players that just go out of their way to have a running battle with you regardless of how the game is going.

At least in hockey, dissent was strongly discouraged.  Plus you could send players off, although that was still a last resort option because no half-decent umpire wants things to get to the stage where someone has to get sent off (unless it's for an obvious card offence).

Yep I’m with you on that, social players suck. Stephen Fleming played for us and once was standing under the umpires box when I called a stumping. The batsman turned to abuse me and Flem said ‘nah mate, that’s out’. I hated umpiring but that was a highlight.

To be honest, Shingles would be an okay result compared to some of the dark thoughts I was having while lying awake with bad chest pains all night on Monday.

                Hahaha that's classic!

Some of those international players were actually the absolute worst to umpire at club level because if they perceived an umpire as less experienced they would basically try and throw their weight around to intimidate them and try and get all the 50/50 calls to go their way.  I umpired a few games with Simon Taylor who has been at any number of Olympics and World Cups.  I remember giving a penalty corner against Ryan Archibald once (former Black Stick) and he wasn't happy about it.  As Simon was walking over for the PC, Ryan tried to complain to him.  Simon said something to him along the lines of how he should probably count himself lucky he didn't get a card for it as well.  Didn't have too much trouble out of him after that.

I have done quite a bit of football referring and cricket umpiring through my girls sport.

Football was not great when they were playing mixed grade.

They have been playing girls only cricket and football the last year.  It is so much better than mixed, girls politely accept 50-50 calls.

Having umpired both womens and mens hockey, I probably had the same experience as you Watson.  It was actually surprising how different the womens and mens game are from an umpiring perspective.  In some ways the womens game is easier and more enjoyable to umpire, like your experiences Watson I found they are far less likely to argue 50/50 calls and tend to just get on with the game.

Having said that at a more senior level there tend to also be a select few who are generally much better than their male counterparts at committing sneaky off-the-ball fouls and not getting caught!

Shingles has been confirmed which is unfortunate, but better now than a month ago or in a month.  I've got anti-virals to reduce the duration and codeine for the pain (which I only plan to take at night so I can sleep).  I'll play it by feel as to whether to run and how far and hard to go.  I expect I'll be doing easy to recovery pace at best based on the way I currently feel.

piwi - Yep, the chicken pox virus lays dormant after you have it and sometimes reactivates as Shingles.  They don't really know why but think stress could be a reason (among others but that's the only one that may apply to me).  There's a vaccine available in NZ if you are over 50.  I would recommend getting it!  It's a vaccine that actually provides full immunity.
