Steve - yes! Nothing like listening to Smashing Pumpkins or Rage Against the Machine on your walkman on a cassette you'd dubbed off your mate.

Dave - can you count the 8k as a 5 miler as well?? Nice work.

a smith - big arms don't help you run fast!

Darkwave - I'm interested to see what happens with my kids generations. My 6 year old defaults to finding videos on youtube kids with voice search.  Not my preferred way of doing things but I've refrained from comment thus far!

Or sitting next to the radio waiting to hear your favourite song to record...probably more Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Metallica for me in the early 90s.  Oh and trying to be caller 9 each hour to win a prized album you couldn't afford to buy.  I usually won ones I wasn't that keen on but eventually won INXS, Live Baby Live after a whole weekend of trying.  The excitement was huge...

And hearing a new song on the radio and having no idea what it is, or any way to find out if you had to get out of the car before the DJ called out the last 10 songs or whatever. No digital display, no Shazam, no internet to look up lyrics.

Early in the internet days, there used to be a website called something like KissThisGuy.com, listing the most popular mis-heard song lyrics. Named after Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze”—“ ‘scuse me, while I kiss this guy.” I had a friend who actually referred to those as “Boston Choirs,” based on someone he knew who in the song “I’m Not in Love,” with the line “big boys don’t cry,” thought it was “Big Boston Choir.”

Merkle any hill in a 5k is a killer. You did well.

Steve thanks for the vote of confidence. I was in pretty good shape when I was doing Hagley but seemed to get stuck around 18.15. We can compare Parkrun notes on Saturday.  Papamoa is getting a Parkrun too so that's cool.

Nice job on your exam. You must feel alot of stress is behind you now with house sale, marathon training and exams !

              Not an 80%er

So the other day I had this song playing in my head and I wanted to find it on youtube. So I went online searching for the lyrics I remembered, something like:
                "my, oh my, oh my".

Weirdly, there were a ton of results but none close to what I was looking for.

Then I added some more keywords to it like "80's" and "pop song".

Eventually I found a link to a reddit thread where someone was trying to find the exact same song. That person actually found the answer by themselves, and it turns out they, like myself, were remembering the song wrong, the lyrics are actually "Life, oh life, oh liiiiiiife", song is called Life, from Des'ree 🤦‍♂️😂

I've used midomi.com in the past for situations like this, you can try to lalala/hum your way into finding the song, it actually works for well known songs.

Piwi - I'm loving the consistency.

Mark - Nice week. Those "trail adventures" do mess with the legs in interesting ways, don't they? Hitting all those supporting muscles you don't typically use much on the roads.

Merkle - I'm in agreement with JMac regarding proceeding towards the marathon.

Steve - Your takes are always interesting. I hear you on the gen y vs millenial thing. I was dang near 30 before anyone ever accused me of being a millenial.
Based on DWave's summation, I fall more into the Gen X category despite being a decade younger - I had massive amounts of autonomy growing up (running around the creek, or riding my bike alone for hours), learned to look up books by card catalog, jumped from analog research to digital in my last couple years of HS, etc.

DWave - Finding music used to be a massive undertaking! Even when digital was more available, translating a song you heard on the radio and actually being able to find it again was difficult. For the longest time I kept a little notebook filled with snippets of song lyrics I remembered so I could search for those and locate the full song.

My first decent week in a good while (comparatively speaking). I think I'm used to the heat/humidity now as much as I can be and will likely be ramping up the mileage again soon. Just in time, since RA tells me that with all my reduced mileage weeks after rolling my ankle that I now need to average nearly 85mpw for the rest of the year to hit my arbitrary mileage goal (one more mile than last year).

Hash - That is such a strong field for a "small" race, although big by NZ standards of course.  Great result for you too, so fast.  I know you didn't get a chance to train as you wanted for ChCh, are you going to take another swing at the full?  You're surely very close to a sub 3 guy.

A couple of guys from my coaching group ran PBs in the Wellington half too, sounds like a perfect day (so the next good weather day for the Wellington marathon is due in 2033....).

Hagley - I ran the loop for the Hagley Park Run during my easy run last night.  It's so slippery with mud and leaves all over the nicely sealed paths.  We haven't seen the sun for 3 weeks, with warmer temps than usual for June (10C/50F or higher) but generally just constant drizzle.  That's supposed to change today with a cold southerly and heavy rain, followed by potential clear freezing days later in the week.  So the point of all that is it may be very slippery on Saturday, especially in the Endorphin Pros, and with a couple of tight turns.  75% of the path is under trees which will reduce the amount of ice at least.
