MMikey- will you and Cal be submitting samples for ped testing prior to the race? All of that treadmill training has me wondering

I’m just hoping I don’t become addicted to fentanyl in San Francisco before I hit the CIM start line.

My longest treadmill run was 50k, the first 42k was at 12km/hr and last 8k was at 15km/hr iirc.  It was a long long time ago before any running books were written and I now realise in hindsight that it was a silly workout to do.

Anyone else see the video of the elite runner follow the police motorcycle off course at the end of a 10k? It lost her $7,000 freedom units.

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

Yes, reminiscent of the 1994 NYC Marathon where German Silva did the same thing.  Fortunately there was enough time for him to recover and still win the race.  He had more of an excuse  because shortly after his miscue the course did make a right turn, and also the finish line was not in clear sight.

Yeah. She could literally see the finish line at that point and I think had run that race before so she must've been deeeeep in the pain cave.

My week done and dusted.  The cold that was threatening last week finally hit me Tuesday... only wrote off one day of training but played it safe and took it pretty easy the rest of the week.  It's not that bad, just seems to be hanging around a bit.

                  Not an 80%er

And here's my week. As usual the end of the long run sucked, I suppose if I keep at it eventually these won't suck so much.

Also completed my challenge to run every street in Porto. That was a fun challenge and gave me a lot of variety in training.

But now it's time for a change. It's a known fact that pretty much every race I started was either a PR or a positive split ๐Ÿ˜‚ Hell I managed to positive split a 1500m race. I also regularly positive split workouts.

So yeah, patience is gonna be my keyword going forward, and hopefully I'll have a lot of very boring runs going forward.

Flavio - Have you started doing 18+ mile long runs already in preparation for Valencia?  Maybe that’s a good thing if endurance is your weakness. Also looking at the elevation of your long run today then I’m not surprised you struggled towards the end, but your HR didn’t shoot up so maybe you just need to man up.

                        My week:

Wednesday was 3x1 mile targeting VO2max. I like this to be under 6:30 pace and ideally closer to 6:20. But all 3 were stuck right around 6:35, I could not go any faster. I was kind of disappointed. Got home and looked at my phone to see the AQI was 144. Can I blame that? I’m going to. Planning a parkrun 5k next weekend; going with the 2 weeks pre-half option. So not sure how this bodes.

Most of my LRs have been steady pace, so in consideration of longer race distances to come, decided to add 5 MP-ish miles on the end of a 16. I was looking for 7:20-7:30; they ended up around 7:30, so OK I guess. But it was hard. I was not particularly satisfied with the effort required to hit that pace. Oh well, my marathon isn’t for 10 weeks. Although I plan a half in 3 weeks, and another 4 weeks after that. So we’ll see how things go.

Flavio - Really impressive long run.  Mikkey is right, you're doing a fair bit of climbing.  Your strength in all aspects will be through the roof.

Dave - Good week from you.  I wouldn't worry too much about that speed workout, it's just the way it goes sometimes.  Last week I did a Wednesday LT workout and was really struggling, almost redlining, and didn't think I'd be able to nail a 5km 3 days later.  The 5km was really solid, faster the whole way than any of the repeats in the workout and only got close to the red line in the last 500 metres.

Mark - very sensible week with a cold, coming from someone not always sensible who ends up way sicker than I need to...

A Smith - Agreed.  Earthquakes are really all I need to worry about (which I don't because what good would that do) but I'll accept that for the nice running climate.

My week - First real week back into full work.  Some nice variety, with speed and hills.  Wednesday was hard work but Saturday felt great.  The run on Sunday was fun in a weird way - there were severe gales blowing me into the middle of the road (better than off a cliff), almost zero visibility and heavy rain.  Saw 2 other runners and 1 cyclist, normally there are hundreds up on Summit Road.  It really feels comfortable running along there now, 2 years ago I was working really hard on those hills.  My extra strength definitely helps.

CK - very belated, but congrats on a good mile.  You clearly have much faster in you, but that was a really good first try at the distance IMHO.

Treadmills - love them.  Love running to music.

Marky_Mark - I hope you kick the cold soon.

Flavio- congratulations on completing the challenge.  May your long runs evolve to be less sucky.

Dave - you don't need my permission for anything, but yes, I would absolutely take the AQ into consideration with regard to that workout.

Steve - we runners do have an odd sense of "fun" don't we?  (heavy rains and strong winds)

                            My week:

65 miles running, 500 yards swimming, and 90 minutes pool-running.
                            M: 10 miles, including a track workout of 2x1200, 2x800, 2x400, 2x200 in 5:02, 4:58, 3:17, 3:16, 97, 96, 47, 47. Recoveries of 2:3x-2:4x in between. Followed with leg strengthwork.
                            T: 6.5 miles very easy (9:51), cheer at a 5K, 3.5 miles easy (8:58), and streaming yoga.
W: 10 miles very easy on treadmill (9:34) and upper body weights/core
Th: 90 minutes pool-running and streaming yoga
F: 10 miles, including 5 Iwo Jima hills (alternate route - this was about 2:30 up, then 60 second jog; 30 second stride, and 60 seconds to bottom of hill.) Followed with leg strengthwork.
Sa: 10.5 miles easy (9:42), plus drills/strides and upper body weights/core.
Su: 14 miles progressive, split as first 5 miles averaging 10:05 pace, next 5.5 averaging 8:17 pace, next 3.5 averaging 7:56 pace, and then a half-mile cooldown. Followed with injury prevention work and 500 yards recovery swimming.

My land mileage is inflated because I moved a pool-running day from Monday to Saturday of the week before.

Just trying to build some fitness/strength before getting serious about marathon training.  The week started better than it ended, but that's probably because the weather got worse as the week went on.

The only other thing of note is that the infamous Iwo Jima hill workout got revised.  Essentially there is a traditional Iwo Jima hill workout that my running team used to do.  The team stopped the workout when the original route was repaved in concrete - I don't mind concrete at all, so I kept doing the workout solo.  But now my coach figured out an alternate route up and down the hill, so I did that one with the team on Friday.

The biggest change from the alternate route is that the hill part is now about 20-30 seconds longer, and the recovery jog before the stride is now about 20-30 seconds shorter.   This makes the workout a lot harder.

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Flavio- You're training like a marathoner now!!  Super solid week. Nice long run and workout!  icing on the cake to complete all streets.

Dave and Steve- Instead of repeating myself I'll give you both HUGE kudos on nice weeks.  Steve's always throws me off because I think he's running daily doubles Then I realize it's part of the run.

Mikkey- Are you going to start posting weeklies or is the plan to stay in "stealth mode" until CIM?

DW - You truly are the model for consistency.

I forgot how much I hate summer training!  The Wednesday workout went really well.  I opted to do the mile intervals on the track and am very glad I did.  It was nice to see I may have retained some of the spring fitness.  The LR today sucked.  TDP was almost 150 and I was soaked before I was a mile into the run.  Still managed 3x2 at MP effort which was very hard.

Flavio Nice job on the streets running challenge. It seems difficult to determine which streets need to be covered within a given area. How do you go about that?

Dave How has the weather been besides AQ for you? The heat has been messing with a lot of people. Also mile reps are really long for a VO2 workout. I think the effort matters more, but I understand the disappointment.

Steve Nice week. What is the difference between T and LT for you? I tend to think of them as the same.

dw Really well rounded week there.

                                Fishy Yep, summer training sucks!

Commander Nice go at the mile. In my opinion, run the first lap a little more aggressively next time. I'm sure you can trim lots of time.

This week left me with my tail between my legs, especially after seeing all of your weeks on here. I'm 8 weeks out from Erie and I feel like I need to get my shit together. I'm going to be a bad sport this time, that 6k race was FUCKING BULLSHIT. I am highly highly disappointed that I ran 24 seconds slower than last year. What the fuck? The heat turned what was supposed to be a 15-16 mile (or ~2 hour) long run into 9 miles of ok running followed by what felt like a death march. Next time I should bring more water or just stop for quick refills and/or start earlier in the day. YIKES. Aiming for a much better week this coming week.
