Mikkey - Agreed, but Caster is a slightly different case which makes it far more complex.  I don't see a solution that makes it fair for her or her competitors.

You said race so I'll assume it doesn't have to be running...what a finish:

piwi - Nice one.  I can't believe how much lighter it is, it's still pitch black down here.  I'm sticking to my guns that Hagley is legit!

What is the most exciting race you’ve ever seen at the Olympics? (I’m genuinely curious)

For most Brits I think it was Mo winning the 5000m and 10,000m double in 2012…but for me it was Caster winning the 800m women’s final at Rio and Francine Niyonsaba coming 2nd and Margaret Nyairera coming 3rd….check out that race on YouTube as they were amazing! 😎

This one was exciting as being the deepest, fastest 800m ever

Can't say I was around to see it, in fact I'm not sure there are any "high quality" recordings of it, but Billy Mills taking gold for the 10k in 1964 was legendary. He was the definition of a dark horse. No one expected that. I also thought it was exciting to watch Molly Seidel during the 2021 Olympic Marathon, sticking it out with the East Africans in the heat. There's always Gebrselassie (the true GOAT) vs Tergat in the 2000 Olympic 10k. There are plenty of other good ones, can't pick a favorite for most exciting.

Commander Nothing in particular happened during the race, it was just hot and the time turned out to be slower than it felt like I was running. For the long run, I had my stick of LMNT that morning as usual. I brought 2 6oz bottles with me, half water half Gatorade. I don't think that was enough lol.

            This was a 10k, right?

Many of us aren't sure what the hell point you are trying to make and no matter how we guess, it always seems to be something else. Which usually means a person is doing it on purpose.

This is the best highlight video of that race that I could find.  Note how Gammoudi pushes between Mills and Clarke to take the lead at one point.

I don't know if I was very good as I abandoned my post and ran laps around a nearby rugby field  knowing no one would likely get to my turnaround point before 8.15am as I was about at the 4.7km point

Good stuff Piwi. I've thought about helping at Parkrun but will have to wait until I have a Sat morning free of kids sport, so likely sometime in 2030 haha.

I got a decent week in the bag. Tuesday's workout was a bit tough as the remnants of that cold were definitely messing with my breathing a bit.  But the rest of the week was solid and Thursday's progression went surprisingly well, even coming into the headwind on the way back.  Another trail event coming up next Sunday but most likely I'll just keep the training week pretty normal and sacrifice the Sunday long run for it.  This one is on probably the most benign terrain of the series, mostly gravel trail, so maybe I'll try and push the pace a bit harder.

I admire the parkrun volunteers—they’re of course what keeps the whole thing going. It’s impressive to me that the whole parkrun system works at all. But I’m certainly appreciative; I don’t see the need to ever pay for a 5k. Hard for me to consider doing it though, since Saturday mornings are my group LR days. So I’ll mainly just go whenever I want to race. There are some nice folks that come out to ours though—good people and some strong racers.

60.2 miles for me this week, average overall pace was 8:36 which I’m ok with as that included 14 trail miles with Tyson.  I’m hoping not to dip below 50mpw between now and CIM…but maybe that’s wishful thinking.

Mikkey - Good to see you posting your weekly!  And very nice of Tyson to run at your pace for that long.

Flavio - 20 weeks is a long time.  Apologies if you've already told us but what stages will you have over the 20 weeks?

Mark - Really good week considering you're getting over being sick.  Had a look at Totara Park, I didn't realise there was such a big park area there.  Looks like some potential for fast running this time.

My week - A bit of a build week, with an endurance run on Wednesday which was Zone 3 for 45 mins and turned out to be 10km in 4:29s feeling really comfortable.  Saturday was actually quite a big half marathon workout by my old standards and only got hard in the last repeat, when it was supposed to, and the workout prescribed lifting effort across each repeat.  Started out about 4:12/km pace in the first one and ended up 4:03/km.

Got hit from behind at 80km/h on the motorway this morning after having to slow down for cars in front quite quickly.  My neck and back feel a bit sore so I'll keep an eye on it tonight.  Amazingly my towbar absorbed all the impact, it was a very solid hit, and appears to be no damage to my car.  Can't say the same for the other guy, young guy who was quite upset.  An hour later, my hands have stopped shaking!

The heat is killing me. I might start doing some treadmill miles. The gym isn't much better but at least the sun doesn't cook me there. I'm happy with that tempo but my past two long runs have not been up to my standards at all. For both the 400 repeats and the long run, I had to take a break in the middle to cool down. The last 5 miles of that long run I felt really awful. Like another version of bonking.

                                My week.
Tuesday was my standard 5k race week light workout. I was pretty happy with the paces, more so than I’ve been the last few weeks. It gave me some hope for the race. However Wednesday I randomly tweaked my back again. Then went on a business trip involving ~9 hours in an airplane seat. I never know how long a back pain flareup will last, or how much it will affect my running if at all. Fortunately it didn’t turn out to be too severe, and didn’t seem to affect my running. Although I ended up with some pretty weird sleep & run schedules Thurs-Fri.

Saturday was my parkrun 5k. I was shooting for a PR of 19:45 or better, which also would get me ~80% age grading. Fail: 20:04 (78.57%). Splits were 6:21, 6:23, 6:33; mile 3 I was hanging on for dear life, and I had zero kick at the end. It may be my fitness is just not there, may be after effects of travel & back issues (though my back has felt fine while running). But the weather didn’t help. It was 70F and full sun. Not nearly what many others across the US are dealing with right now, but not really ideal for racing, and a lot warmer than I’m used to. Most of my training runs start ~3hrs earlier in the morning, so are substantially cooler.

Anyway, that’s done, and now onto longer distances. I missed my usual Saturday LR, so did 15 on Sunday. HM in 2 weeks, another in 6 weeks, and marathon in 8 weeks. So I’ll be shifting my workouts from more VO2max to more LT.
