Waiting for this event.........!!!!

I forgot - good call by Steve to skip the race.
Yeah, that's a shame but almost certainly the right thing to do. Good that you've got a new goal and opportunity to use your fitness. Rest up.

Zebano that is pretty much how most races are measured over here. Very few are certified or wheel measured. Most events are run by event companies rather than runners etc. Longboat thanks that's a thorough explanation. What is this data point time adjustment?

Fair enough, I know a couple local races where they had 4 people run the course, look at their watches and go "close enough". That said most will at least bike the course which in my mind is the same as wheeling the course. Trail races are different and expected to be "off". Ultimately I don't often worry about it unless I'm wanting to PR.

Steve - tough but sound decision. Lose the battle, win the war
Mark - I’m impressed you still haven’t forgotten that dude haha.
GPS - my watch always reads very close to the correct distance when on the track. Not sure whether it's my watch, my running gait, or better GPS signal where I ran.
me - A nice week in the bag, almost 40 miles. I've found a potential 5K race that will happen in Oct 2nd. It was supposed to happen in may but got delayed due to COVID. Now if this MFer of a virus could stay away for a while I might just be able to run it.

Up next: some 800m race (or time trials) / Also place in the top 20% in a trail race

I've heard of biking the course with a bike outfitted with a measuring wheel, and that's legit (I can't imagine walking a marathon course three times with a measuring wheel). But measuring with a car? No.
Absolutely, Garmins and other GPS devices are approximations and not exact. It's pretty easy to demonstrate this by either
a) looking at the Garmin map of your run and noting that it has you running over lawns, through buidlings, etc or
b) running with friends and noting that everyone has different measurements for their runs after.
I don't believe that Garmins always measure long, though they measure long more frequently than short. I am neurotic and manually measure my mileage using map my run or similar (it's less complicated than you think - I have landmarks on my regular routes where I regularly lap my watch, and then I correct those distances later in my log). What I've noted is:
1) on the track nearly all Garmins measure long
2) in urban areas or areas with a lot of tree cover Garmin GPS signal will tend to wander and give you credit for more distance than you actually run.
3) if you run gradual bending turns, a Garmin will measure that long as well (most likely for the same reason it reads the track long).
4) if you run a tightly winding serpentine route, or a route with switchbacks, the Garmin will often cheat you on distance.
5) if you run straight on a route with no tall buildings or trees, the Garmin can be very accurate. Hains Point in DC fits this description and has road markings for the mile markers for various certified (i.e. wheel measured) courses. I've found that autolap on my Garmin matches those certified markings perfectly.
I don't buy the "I didn't run the tangents so my race measured long" statement either. Any device that shows one wandering into buildings, rivers, etc is not accurate enough to determine whether you ran the tangents. For a similar reason, I disagree with the idea that wearing a watch on one wrist versus the other would make a difference - again, the general inaccuracy of a Garmin outweighs the minimal difference of left wrist versus right wrist.
Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.
And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Steve - Sucks that you got sick immediately before the race. Feeling any better now? I've never understood the "I don't care if I'm sick, I'm still going in to work" mentality.
Mark - Another nice park run. Congrats on the W.
UPS is on my bad list right now. I ordered some Saucony Endorphin Speeds, which were supposed to have been delivered on Saturday at the latest since they made it to the OKC distribution facility very early Thursday morning. For some unknown reason the delivery has been pushed until tomorrow (Tuesday). I really wanted to try those for my workout today.
We've been having some terrific weather for the past several days - mid-low 60's in the mornings (~15.5-18.3C), but we're forecasted to get back to normal (upper 70's/25+C) by the end of the week. Certainly time to enjoy the cooler temps while they last.
At this point I'm really looking forward to running the 5ks I have coming up - particularly the second one as the first is kinda hilly. I'm thinking they'll both go on at this point (both are small, the first is at the outside edge of an OKC suburb, the second in a part of the state with little to no covid activity), and I think I might could PR even the hillier race, but at the second might be able to knock ~1 min off my current road PR.
5k: 17:58 11/22 │ 10k: 37:55 9/21 │ HM: 1:23:22 4/22 │ M: 2:56:05 12/22
Upcoming Races:
OKC Memorial 5k - April 27
Bun Run 5k - May 4
CK - fingers crossed for both 5Ks. And the shoes....
CK those temps sound nice. Enjoy while they last. My beloved OKC are back up and running in the NBA. 2nd game back starts in an hour.
I dont hold alot of faith in course accuracy in Mark and my upcoming half and 10k. Last time I ran the 10k there it came up as 9.8kms. The last 3kms round the Mount base track is mostly under tree canopy which can't help.

If I ran an uncertified 10k course then I’d keep running after crossing the finish line and stop the watch at say 10.1 if the course was short.
I’ve never had one short reading on my Garmin in 30+ marathons (but they were all certified).
5k - 17:53 (4/19) 10k - 37:53 (11/18) Half - 1:23:18 (4/19) Full - 2:50:43 (4/19)
I just talked to my friend who is the one behind 5k #1 - it has been cancelled, though the RD hasn't sent out any communication stating so yet. In looking up a possible replacement I found something I've never seen before: a "Half Marathon+ (13.6 miles)". It's a complete loop around a local lake - a pretty darn hilly loop at that, too. Not sure why they didn't just make that one a real half. Doesn't bode well for the 10k being certified, either. If more races like this pop up someone will confuse us with New Zealand.... I did find one good 5k option on the 29th - no indication yet as to that one being cancelled (it's outside of OKC, which is promising at least).
Piwi - You'll have to keep me up-to-date on the Thunder.
Keen and Zebano - great weeks.
Flavio - is that your biggest week for a while?
Keen - good luck on getting a race. New Zealand has no community transmission of COVID-19, so we have lots of races.
Re GPS and short courses (or not) - I am pretty sure JMac recorded 4.99km for a certified 5km. I also remember an article from London a few years ago looking at data, and the range was 26.0 to 26.6 miles on Strava. So recording short on legit length courses does happen.
PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)
40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)
2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05
2024 PRs: 5km 20:25
Please try and find this article as I’d be interested in reading it. 👍
Mikkey I'm contemplating it but dont think there is room past the finish line to run like a mad man
The other option is to go past one of the turnarounds by 200m. It could mean missing out on an age group medal etc. I hate putting in all this work for it not to be a legit 10k.

Missing the turn around point will make you look like a moron
Running back and forth in the finishing chute wont be a good look either
