Sorry for my absence all - I found my Mum unconscious with vomit everywhere on Sunday and she went to hospital by ambulance.  She's out now but it seems to be an on-going saga.

I have made sure I haven't missed any runs because it keeps me sane!  I'll try and catch up on the thread and get things back to normal today.

Keen - Or should I say “that runner guy”

Piwi - They are zero drop. Those calf issues can be kept at bay with a lot of strength training.

I mostly started running in Altras because they’re the only ones as wide as my feet. Beforehand, I’d always wear 1 to 2 sizes bigger in other brands, which was not as comfortable.

                Steve - Man, that’s horrifying. I hope she’s alright.

My mom and dad are also ill for quite some time and the worry never ends.

I worry that the diseases will get worse and that they won’t take their meds correctly etc. I also worry that they will take their meds (all 9 pills mom takes daily) and the meds will cause side effects.

Once again, I hope she recovers well.

me - Got the EscalanteRacers out for a workout today and they fit just like a glove. Like custom made. True successors to the Altra Ones that Altra made narrower and narrower until they didn't fit me anymore.

Steve, that is super super scary. I hope it's a one time episode.

Flavvio - great to hear about the Escalante Racers. I used to run in the Ones so I'll give them a shot.

That's frightening, Steve.  Hope the doctors can help.  Running definitely is good for dealing with stress during that sort of situation.  We went through similar issues in recent years with my parents, who had dementia.  They lived in our city, while my MIL, who had some sort of scary stroke-like episode a couple of weeks ago, lives in Chile with the rest of her family.  Not sure whether it's more stressful to be close or to be far away.

Flavio I remember when Altras first came out. They definitely addressed a natural foot outline.

I think alot of the mainstream brands have improved in that area.

My Nike Pegasus 36 for example are really roomy up front. More than I need.

Piwi - Regarding Altras I haven't had any Achilles issues at all using them despite the zero drop. The only soreness I ever had was my calfs after racing a 5k in them after only a week or two of use - no other issues before or since. I think the biggest possible Achilles risk in using them is if someone switches exclusively to them from higher (6-8mm+) drop shoes without doing any sort of transition period. A person needs to ease into things like that most times.

School just started back up in town, which means that depending on my route/time of day traffic is pretty bad. Time to switch that stuff up now.

Thanks all.  She is fine and back at home now but this is about the 10th episode like this, 2 of which have been bad enough to go to ED.  They did an EEG and hopefully that will find something.  She makes it much harder by complaining about doctors and basically everything, and then got angry at me for refusing to take her home until she was discharged.  Then to a find a serious leak through her ceiling one day when I checked in on the cat was just what I needed.

I agree that it's hard to say whether it's worse being close or far away - when I lived overseas it was very stressful, spending hours in meeting rooms at work trying to sort things out.  Being close is really only problematic because of the way she behaves.  If she was nice and grateful for the help it might be different.  Any time I visit I'm met with a list of chores but she then gets very offended when I say perhaps if she can't take her bins out by herself it may be time to think about moving into a retirement village...

I've organised people to check in on her over the weekend because I need a break so I'm heading down to Dunedin for a friend's birthday.

Should mention running - there's a nice cycle path next to the water in Dunedin to run on so I'm looking forward to that, I lived there for 4 years but I enjoy it more for a short visit.

Steve - your situation sounds EXACTLY like what my mother had to deal with, with my grandmother (albeit without the fainting issues).  Needs a lot of help, but not prepared to entertain the concept of moving into a retirement village even though it would probably massively improve the quality of life (and access to urgent help, if needed).

Anyway enjoy Dunedin.  I have very fond memories of that cycle path as it was the last few km's of the Dunedin Half Marathon in 2018 and 2019.  I got a run down there in February, even with a headwind it was still nice.

I have a race tomorrow.  It is our club relay (mixture off grass, dirt and pavement), involving juniors, seniors, walkers, of different length legs.  It pretty much is a time trial, my length is roughly 3.4km.  I did 13:24 last year, so aim is 13:23
