Funny how inaccurate the GPS was for many laps, but it averaged out well.

Nike have released a new track shoe with the Zoom X foam, which must have helped with the world record.

    PRs: 5km 18:43 (Dec 2015), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:26:16 (Sep 2016), full 3:09:28 (Jun 2015)

    40+ PRs: 5km 19:31 (Oct 2020), 10km 39:59 (Sep 2020), half 1:29:39 (Jun 2018), full 3:13:55 (Sep 2022)

    2023 PRs (hope to beat in 2024): 5km 20:34, 10km 41:37, half 1:32:32, full 3:21:05

    2024 PRs: 5km 20:25

I ran a very good workout this morning. I've just uploaded it to Strava. Can you guys have a look and give me some feedback?

      Workout

Just think how fast you could be if you learned to stay in lane 1 instead of swinging out to lane 8!!!

      1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

I notice he ran a 2 mile of 7.59 in there  which would be 2nd all time but not official as just off Strava.

Piwi - did you watch the live stream of the National XC Challenge?  Hayden Wilde absolutely dominant in the mens, winning by over a minute.  Even if the Auckland runners had been able to compete, I don't think Cam Graves would have gotten close.

Mark I haven't seen it but I know he went down with Sam Tanner. Sam is probably faster middle distance and track but Hayden is likely tougher. One of my Strava mates got 2nd in your age group but you would have beaten him.

Tanner was second.  He held off Oli Chignell pretty comfortably.

The Masters Mens field was pretty depleted tbh.  No Greg Darbyshire or Nick Moore from Auckland, they would both have been up there.  Not a lot of Wellington runners either and they have a very strong Masters group.  The mens winner was Dwight Grieve, he is a solid runner and very strong but only around a 1:15 half at National Champs last year.

This was a recovery week, and a short one since I took my son to central Alabama today to take his SATs (university application exams) since they weren’t offered closer to home because of covid concerns.  Was surprised at how tired I felt on Monday after a slowish 5K two days before, so I didn’t go far.  Felt better later in the week.  My plan D half for the fall has also been cancelled (after plan B earlier this week), so I'm down to plan C or just running a 5K in November and hoping the weather is warmer than usual for our local January half.

                    Sun - 31 minutes swimming

                    Mon - 3.1 miles slow

                    Tues - 7.7 easy

                    Weds - 31 minutes swimming

                    Thurs - 12.1 easy, TDP 159

                    Fri - 7.7 slow

                    Sat - off

                    Total - about 30.6 miles

                    12/26/52-week averages - 42/42/39 mpw

                    Post-1987 PRs:  Half 1:30:14 (2019); 10K 39:35 (2019); 5K 19:12 (2017); Mile 5:37.3 (2020)

James nice week and good luck to your son. We had our daughter back from university this week but she flew back yesterday.

My week back on track with 50 miles. Track tempo wednesday was more like 10k race pace but I averaged under 3.50/km for 6kms. Today's longrun in a brand new pair of Beacon 2 and they felt very firm and hard on my calves.

James - bummer on the race cancellation.  Glad those legs were feeling better by the end of the week.

Piwi - good job on that track session.

Me - mostly a recovery week this week but got a good tempo session in yesterday with 21km at a tick ahead of MP.  I've entered my Plan C race (Wairarapa Country Marathon) as they promise refunding entries less a $10 charge if you decide not to run, so no real downside there.

edit: Oh, and August came in as my biggest mileage month ever (I will have a day off tomorrow) at 459km.

second edit: I can’t believe I forgot to mention this initially, but I saw Nathan Jones while I was out running this morning.

Got a good chuckle out of the Nathan Jones reference.

I'll keep annoying Mark that his MP is actually sub 2:35 even if he claims it's above MP. If you guys get lucky and can run these marathons, I will pass off my sandbagging crown to him (Steve has already taken my taper madness crown).

Will respond to the rest after I post. I still feel odd seeing weeks posted before I've even done my Saturday run.

Agreed.  OTOH, it's really nice to not be in a US-dominated discussion group, if you know what I mean.  Preserves some perspective.

James - I am surprised they are still offering the SAT - I thought that was cancelled.  Very sorry about the cancellation

Marky Mark - good call on the plan C race.  And congrats on the good tempo and the monthly kilometerage PR!

(why do you call it "mileage" if it's in km?)

So... last week, after a crash-and-burn Saturday long run, I decided to get some blood pulled to check my ferritin and general CBC and also my vitamin D (because I'm supposed to be checking that regularly and haven't in a while). So I bought a blood test package from one of those online companies (they use a real lab - Quest - so the results themselves should be legit) and scheduled the blood pull for Wednesday.

Then I did Tuesday's workout, which was ridiculous. 97 seconds for 400m on the track felt like 85 seconds used to. The workout was supposed to be 2x400, 4x800, 2x400, but I bailed after my right ankle briefly spasmed during the 3rd 800.

I haven't mentioned it much, but I've also had some on-and-off mild nausea over the past few years that has become more persistent over the past few months. Between that and what seems like a really sharp loss of fitness I decided it was time to check in with the primary care doctor. He scheduled some more bloodwork (for Thursday) and a virtual appointment for this upcoming week.

I got my first round of bloodwork back on Thursday evening (directly from Quest). CBC normal, ferritin normal if surprisingly high for me or any runner (136 - I usually see between 50-90 when I am running well), vitamin D normal. But....a test for serum folate was also included. And that result came back low. It's 1.7, where the lab lists 5.4 and above as normal, and between 3.4 and 5.4 as "borderline."

Folate deficiency is sometimes seen in people with inflammatory bowel disease (check) and can result in fatigue and weakness even if not anemic (check). It's also often matched by B12 deficiency, which can result in fatigue and nerve pain. And guess who has had all sorts of nerve issues this year?

So...I'm pausing serious training until I meet with my primary care doctor and figure out how to proceed. I don't know everything he ordered checked, but I do know it included B12 and a complete iron panel. And no, I'm not supplementing with folate in the meantime. a) I don't like to use supplements unless a doctor has told me to and b) my understanding is that if you have both a B12 and a folate deficiency, it's crucial to treat the B12 first - treating the folate without fixing the B12 can make nerve issues worse.

darkwave - Sounds scary; good luck.  I guess the positive way to think about it is that knowing what the problem is is a step towards fixing it.

The SAT hasn't been cancelled, though it's not being offered anywhere closer than an hour away from us (decisions by local school boards or schools).  A lot of universities aren't requiring it for applications this year, but we figure if he gets a good score, it could help, and if he doesn't, he just won't submit the score to the universities when he applies.  Yesterday wasn't too difficult, since Alabama is an hour behind our time zone and the site was an hour's drive from here.  (He's taking it elsewhere in Georgia next month, and we will have to get up early for that one.)  All the students and the proctor had to wear masks and were given brief health checks upon arrival, and he said the desks were spaced apart, so he wasn't too concerned about the virus.

Darkwave - It’s impressive that not everybody is as thorough and detailed when caring for their own health as you are.

Hopefully the doc figures it out quickly and you can start treatment right away.

JMac - good to see you around.

Me - We have moved today to another town (Bologna).

It might surprise you guys to hear that everything we own fit in 2 small backpacks and a set of small/medium/large bags.

I can already see it’s not flat like Ravenna.

                                Ravenna was like this:

Bologna is relatively flat, but not flat. It seems you’re always either going up or down, but the grade is small like 1 or 2%.

I’m evaluating options for my 5k time trial this next Sunday and I’ve found no flat option, though there are many almost flat options.
