Yeah I think that's the point - you could do one if you had to but it would suck and probably completely empty the tank.

Ah OK, that makes sense now!

      Possibly relevant (or possibly not).

I have quite a few runner acquaintances on social media who will post workouts with comments like "so tough but I battled through" or "I was a warrior today in rep 5."   And whenever I read those descriptions of workouts I wonder "if you're fighting oh so very hard in your workouts, then what do you have left for race day?"

Piwi really hit on this but certain workouts... they're just hard, notably VO2 workouts. As a counterpoint, knowing that you endured those difficult workouts is part of what helps me race well. There's a fine line between hard enough to make adaptions and too hard but I do think there's some value to workouts like that, especially if you know you had one more rep in you, and this doesn't IMO preclude some physical struggles to stay on pace.

      1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

Yep agreed on above, VO2 I'm absolutely done when I'm done. I often feel like I'm done in those workouts even I've just begun!

Marathon Pace work, I usually feel like I can get another mile or two in.

I get pre workout anxiety too especially with vo2max

They are tough to be ready for especially as Im running them at 6am after stumbling out of bed.

They often leave me yawning alot for the rest of the day.

I've heard that vo2max declines as you age and older runners do have to pull back on this type of workout.

But they really ready you for 5ks.

I have my City to Surf 11 km race tomorrow. 10am start so I'm hoping its not too hot.

I should be on full taper madness but the anticipation of a new lockdown is keeping my mind busy.

We've moved to Italy so that we could finally be close to everything and be able to visit all the cool places we've been waiting so long, damn pandemics getting in the way.

Weather forecast for Sunday early morning is 10-12C with little wind to speak of.

Running solo will be hard, but I truly hope for a sub 18.

I've gone to the well on Sep 6th and October 11th, hopefully there's still a bit left.

Piwi - Go get it, are you going to run it all out? Or jog the first few kms then speed up like a demon and catch as many as you can?

Flavio good luck remember we are all virtually supporting you and I have a 5k next weekend so you need to show me the way

I will be aiming at 3.50/km if its not too hot for the first 8kms then hold on round the hilly off road bit.

Okay, so this 11K, what should we set the error in measurement at? I set the over/under at 0.13KM.

Piwi - good luck for tomorrow!  Looks like it'll be humid up here for the Auckland Marathon tomorrow, bit like when I ran the marathon in 2017.  Could be a slightly tough day out there but they've got one of the stronger local fields in recent years even with no international entrants.

Mark I think its westerly tomorrow so hopefully slightly cooler.

Jmac las time i ran this I got 11.3kms and they called it a 12k. I know its a joke. At least its a distance tha no one cares about . I might just try for a decent 10k split. At least I know its longer than that.

                      Good luck Flavio and piwi.

I got caught up in the Hagley Park run on my run this morning, I completely forgot about it.  Unfortunately I must have been in the bunch of 25-30 minute 5km runners so a lot of dodging and weaving but didn't matter on my easy first lap.  A lot more people than I expected doing that race.

I ran early by my standards today because it's forecast to be warm - lucky for me the high cloud stuck around until my last 2km so kept it down to 20C (70F).  Within 30 minutes of finishing it was up to 28C (83F) which is outside my comfort zone for a workout.  Thankfully I didn't have the same issue as last week and got faster and stronger during the 6km of quality.  Interestingly, for the whole 10km of easy pace building up to the quality, my brain kept telling me I felt off and should either reduce the quality or stick to easy pace.  Had to tell it to shut up in the end because when I really focused, I knew I was feeling good.

My cousin (incidentally, his name is Nathan Jones*) is doing the Auckland full tomorrow, aiming for around 4.5 hours.  He only started running a year ago so he's doing great especially considering he just got the keys to the house his family built this week.

*Not really - I can't back that up

Steve I hope the temperatures are lower for when I run your parkrun next week. Its been a bit cool here today just grey and drizzly.

I should be finishing with 1.40 to 1.45 half marathoners tomorrow as they start 1 hour earlier and join back onto the same course. At least it will give me targets to catch

Zero miles for me this week, after running five times almost every week this year.  I now have three lower-body medical issues - upper hamstring tendinopathy, a small hernia, and an infection in what I'll call my extreme lower abdomen.  As my primary care doctor predicted, the surgeon doesn't want to operate on the hernia and says I should be able to run or swim with it and to let him know if it hurts or bulges more.  The PT thinks run-walk will be ok for the hamstring once it isn't hurting and thinks swimming should be ok for it now.  Between mild pain and continuing discomfort, I haven't felt up to doing anything and hope the antibiotics will help me feel better.  We expect our son to come home tomorrow after nearly a week in the hospital.  This procedure - draining from an infected abcess - was more painful, and recovery longer, than the original appendectomy.  He's a little better each day, though.  I stayed with him in the hospital from Monday through Thursday morning and used the excuse of my surgeon's appointment to convince the hospital to let my wife move in, as she wanted.  Looking forward to getting them home & getting everything back to normal.
