Fred I have a handbrake foot pedal on the LHS  so the danger is hitting that .

We had one of those when I was learning to drive.  Push the brake with the foot and release it by pulling a lever.  The result was in winter, when your shoe had mud and ice on it, you'd leave some of that on the pedal when you set the brake, and then the muck would be catapulted up into your lap and face when you released the brake and the pedal snapped back up.

I'm sad to say, I don't see the winner of that race making it to the Olympics.  I hope I'm wrong on that.  But if I was the fourth place finisher, I'd definitely get fit and ready to go to Paris if the opportunity arose.

I'm guessing this isn't a reference to an injury.  Do you have inside knowledge?

Fred - Hang in there mate.  Just do what you can and don't worry about missing a run.  During similar times for me, easy running is good and helps clear the cobwebs.  Workouts though are VERY hard to get motivated for.

The US Olympic trials, I think are fine.  It's probably as good a selection process as there can be.  Any alternatives will just have other problems, e.g. if it's based on best times in the last year, then do downhill courses (incl. Boston) count?  Some people could be unlucky and get races with bad weather etc.

And making it arbitrary would be worse.

Steve - that was a hard long run!  I'm not sure I could do that in a training run.

Thanks watson.  The next 2 weekends are potentially harder - actually, they're longer but without zone 4 it could be argued they're easier.  The good thing about Saturday is I only really felt like I had to work hard in the last 2 minutes of zone 4.  The much cooler weather definitely helped.  My body actually feels really good with 6 of the last 7 weeks being 100+km.  2 more quite big weeks then a tune up race - it will be interesting to see whether I can hold a good pace on legs that will surely have some residual fatigue.

The Australian women's criteria is solely based on times and with 6 realistic contenders it means they're all looking for fast, flat courses with lots of male pacers.  It's really 4 going for 1 spot given Sinead Diver set an Aussie record early in the qualifying period and Lisa Weightman then ran the second fastest time ever.   It's still a selection process though, but very hard to see that they'd not just choose the 3 fastest times, given all are fit and have had an opportunity during the qualifying period.

I always wonder why they don't make trials somewhere in the range of a HM to 20 miles roughly a month out. This way you aren't needing to peak 2x for the marathon. I'm sure that would interfere with track events, so the athletes may not be able to change their focus if they aren;t top 3. I'm surprised there isn;t some sort of readiness event shortly before the athletes leave for the games.

I guess it would be better for promoting the race that they're racing the distance.  Plus if you made it shorter then it would advantage those who are relatively better over the shorter distance.

I think I'm with Watson here. The best way of picking your best marathoners is to have them run a marathon.  It's far enough out from the Olympics that they can be fully ready for that as well.

I think for countries like NZ and Australia with a limited talent pool you can do it on the basis of the best times, particularly when runners are generally racing overseas and it's almost impossible to get everyone like for like.  But for the likes of the US it entirely makes sense to have a trial system.  I guess the one variable that is challenging though is climate.  Different runners may respond differently to different conditions.  IDK how Orlando weather in winter compares to Paris weather in late August, but in relative terms some runners will naturally perform better in cooler conditions and some better in warmer conditions I guess.

Steve - damn, that's a lot of work in the bag. You are gonna feel amazing by the time autumn weather hits.

Seems pretty unethical to me especially if juicing is bad for you. Probably won't be that easy for retired athletes to regain form either.

My feeling is that those games will not last long.  PEDs are rampant in sport, but the doping policies do put some limits on it.  I suspect the doping games will not draw people into the "magic" of sport.

I hadn't heard about this.  Can't say I'm a big fan.  From the little I know, many PEDs are not without negative or even dangerous side effects.  I'm uneasy with the ethics of supporting an enterprise that openly encourages people to harm themselves (and I kind of feel that way about the NFL with all the concussions and CTE).

I just read that Parkrun has removed all of their results so as to not put off new park runners ?

You get only the result from the latest Parkrun.

Man I really used the age category results as motivation so I'm very disappointed. This has woke written all over it !
