Mother of Cats

Mikkey - Everything I've read on them says people hate them at 5K speed, and even at 10K speed, but start liking them at HMP and definitely at MP. I race in very firm shoes for 5ks and 10Ks, I could never imagine running in something like the Vaporfly

Pardon me for delurking again, but yes - they have a sweet spot, and in my experience that is between 10 mile and marathon pace.  They don't feel great when you get up on your toes, and you can't really kick or turn quickly in them.

I raced the Fifth Avenue Mile back in early September, and was shocked how many people in my heat were wearing them.  None of them did very well, as far as I could tell...

Everyone's gotta running blog; I'm the only one with a POOL-RUNNING blog.

And...if you want a running Instagram where all the pictures are of cats, I've got you covered.

Given how much I invade your thread trying to steal your sub 3 folks, I think it's okay for you stop by once in a while

Darkwave:  You are always welcome here; it would be great if you were a regular on this thread. We could all benefit from your experience and wisdom.

MT:  Welcome back! It's good to have someone here from the old RWOL sub 3:10 group. Nice job putting the 6 weeks together. Running on soft surfaces is a smart move. I think the fact that I run 90% of the time on dirt roads has helped me avoid injuries over the years. Another thing that may help you is to use Dr. Scholl's running inserts (I think they are called athletic running series). I use these in all my running shoes (remove the insert the shoes come with and replace with the Dr. Scholl's). Do you know exactly what your injuries were? You said your hip blew up, do you know what the injury was? Always good to know exactly what the injury is to help track down the root cause and prevent it in the future.

Mikey so brother 1 is in Crowborough where we will stay most of the time and brother 2 shifted from Brighton to Hastings which I see isnt too far. Anyway we will have to go for a jog on course pre race week.

I didn’t hate them and ran the time I expected in the 5k. I’ll try a few MP runs in them next year and see how that goes. At the end of the day they are just a pair of shoes...if I don’t like them then I’ll sell them on eBay and no doubt get most of my money back.

Well, I'm back home after my quick trip up north Smile  Looks like I missed some good discussion the past week!  Sorry for those I missed.  Good luck to those racing this weekend!

Cal:  Damn that's a huge week!  And a marathon LR to cap it off!

BGS:  Hope you can recovery soon.  Feel better!

Cyber: Congrats on a sub 3!

              Piwi:  Hey welcome back!

JT:  Happy to see you out there running again.  Pretty quick recovery all things considered.

Kram:  Solid couple of workouts in that week!

MT: Welcome - you were on the RWOL forums right?

JMAC:  Glad the foot is doing better.  Hope the taper is going well.  Looking forward to your weekend coming up Smile

Solid week for me that ended in a new 5K race PR on Sunday.  As I mentioned had to bail on my original goal (fitness check race) 5K Saturday night as I had to travel back to my western NY hometown for a funeral instead so I ended up jumping into a small Buffalo area 5K fun run on Sunday afternoon instead.  Didn't know much about the course, but from looking at that route knew there was a fairly sharp decline at the end of mile 1 and then a sort of nasty climb just after mile 2 at least by FL standards!  Was in the upper 30's (lower 30's with the wind-chill) with a misty light rain so decided I would run a longer slow warmup and then strip off my clothes and go since I parked close to the start/finish area.  Only downside is that the race started about 10 minutes later they intended so I was stuck running a bit longer than expected to stay warm and I think it took me a bit to get going in the first mile.  Still hit the first mile (that included the downhill) in about 5:21, which at the time thought it might be a bit slow since I was hoping for to bank some time for the upcoming uphill in about a mile.  Another downside is that I was alone the entire race after about a few hundred meters with the lone police escort as there was no one faster to run in this small race so it basically turned into a solo 5K time trial workout.  Hit the uphill fairly hard just before mile 2, but it quickly zapped my legs and my pace dropped into the low 6 range on each of the steepest grades along the climb.  After about another few hundred meters the course leveled off and I tried to empty whatever I had left.  Turned a corner with about 1/2 mile to go (back into the cold wind) and just hammered all the way to the finish.  Crossed the line and heard the announcer mention 16:55, but they only recorded a gun time which turned out to be 16:57.  So with the uphill and the conditions more than pleased with the result.  Might have been a few seconds faster if I had a few folks to run with, but figure this was good training especially for mental toughness!

Rest of the week was fairly EZ with the exception of a ladder workout on Wednesday.  Over the weekend was different to get to run again in the cold (and rain) after being so warm for so many months here.  Think I'd rather have snow than run in the upper 30's with rain though.  I will say though my run yesterday before I left was glorious where it was in the upper 40's with full sun and nearly no wind!

              RIP Milkman

Weather - Congrats again on the 5K. I love your modest "it was tough running a time trial." Just say you won, it's okay! I've never won a race before so if I did, I'd be sure to tell everyone.  Actually was going to ask you this at another time, but given you spoke about hills in the race: how do you train for Boston living in Florida?

JMAC:  LOL - thanks Smile  As for hill traininig for Boston it's a mixture of the bridge workouts I do (e.g. see this mornings workout) where there is about a 0.4 mile uphill (and downhill) at a good 3-4% grade or so and then another route (see last Monday's run) where I can easily get in several hundred ft of climbing in 7-8 miles or more. In fact there is an uphill that is easily about 7-8% for a very short stretch.  Max elevation is about 80 ft or so though but running repeats can help.  Adding those in towards the end of some my LR's help quite a bit too.

                  RIP Milkman

Weather - I know those bridge repeats well after following you for a while, makes sense.

Andres - If you're lurking, I just discovered the corrals close much later than they have in years past. Wave 1 corrals used to close at 9:00 for a 9:50 start, which was miserable because they'd throw you up on the bridge around 9:10 and then you'd just stand there with no access to bathrooms for 40 minutes. Now the corral is closing 25 minutes later at 9:25. I wonder what made them do this, but I am thankful for the change. I barely made my corral closing last year even getting to midtown at 6 am for the bus.

Weather: Congrats on the sub 17 and the win! I think you've been at sub-17 fitness for quite a while but just didn't get the right conditions for it, glad it worked out this time, though sounds like it was still not exactly ideal weather-wise. Nice that you could enjoy some cooler fall weather up here.

JMac and Kram: Looks like the weather may actually cooperate for both of you; NYC looks good for Sunday morning and Indianapolis looks good for Saturday morning!

                      RIP Milkman

No weather excuses this time around, 46 at race start and 51 by the finish with abundant sunshine. Pretty much perfect marathon weather. This is a sign that I bring the best weather to races, so Boston 2019 is going to be just as beautiful

Going to test out the foot in my marathon racing shoes tonight to see how they hold up with less cushioning. My easy run last night was the same level of pain as usual, but it's manageable, i.e. it's not getting worse. so that's good? But it's definitely not taper phantoms at this point given it's now reached a week of pain. 4 more days of light running will mean it should only maintain or get better before race day. Staying optimistic

Question for the group though - anyone ever run a marathon on something like ibuprofen?

Weather: Awesome job on the 5k!

JT: Yup weather looking good. No excuses!

JMAC: I've never run on pain meds before. Cyclists do this all the time (and with much more powerful stuff like Tramadol), so they can go deep into the red... shut up legs! Maybe bring one with incase you feel significant pain coming on during the race, or maybe just as a mental safety blanket if nothing else. When you get to 20, then you'll have a much different source of pain to worry about. I didn't get the impression it was that bad from your previous posts and your strava runs... but if I felt I needed to take pain meds to run, then not running would be a serious option.

                          RIP Milkman

Kram - It's a pain around 2 or 3 out of 10. So it's manageable when just doing easy runs, but as you said, I have no idea what it's going to feel like 20 miles in and if it'll become unbearable after the beating your feet takes. I probably would want to take beforehand just so its absorbed and not sitting in my stomach when my body will reject it. I defintiely don't need the meds to run as seen by my easy runs, but the marathon is a beast. Leaning towards not taking meds just curious on whether others had.

Mikey - I am not long enough in this running stuff (since 2011) but I've never heard so many discussions about any shoe - like what I see in case with Vaporfly. And also there are too many people who experienced sudden uptick in their results - hard to ignore, but certainly will try them some time in the future - hard to avoid

weatherboy - man... 16:57 at a hilly course with a wind. Cannot relate - never was even close beating 18 minutes mark (I think my PR is 18:24?) - so, the only way I may experience that kind of speed is during 100/200 meters speed workouts Smile Congrats on the PR and the win.

Last day of the month today and have to share the best way to train for a marathon - just gently and steadily increasing the mileage Smile

Weatherboy hi. Congrats that is a lifetime barrier to break and one I will never experience

Jmac remember dont try anything new on raceday....that includes meds. Put up with that bruised feeling. It wont impact your perfomance.

Cal you run 2.48 and cant break 18.24 shows the different type of runners on here. I reckon I could hit 18.30 now but 2.48 is a dream
