Notes

Run with Kevin. He went 11 miles and then I added on a few more. I felt tired to start but then got really comfortable about halfway through. We were rolling along at a pretty good pace today.

Injury Note: I met with the podiatrist to discuss my MRI results this morning. It showed that I have avascular necrosis of the medial sesamoid. Which I guess means that at some point I did crack/fracture the sesamoid bone in my foot, and after that or at the same time I also broke the blood vessel that goes to it. This means one of my sesamoid bones is dying and is why it continues to hurt. He told me time off is very unlikely to heal it at this point so my options are to keep running on it until I can't take it anymore or to have surgery to get the bone removed. I believe they reattach some tendons to the other sesamoid. I'm looking into the surgery now but I'm hoping to increase my mileage the next couple of months and see how my toe feels. If it continues to hurt a lot I'm leaning toward the surgery. Not the best news to get but I'm really happy to at least know what is going on after almost 2 years of pain.

Thanks for the injury update. That sucks, necrosis can be super painful and a long, slow process with few options for immediate relief. I don't know anything about this particular surgery, but in general I always say seek a second opinion from another provider who fully understands your unique training demands, just for good measure. Sounds like surgery might end up being the right option eventually, but it's definitely something you want to be sure about. Those feet are valuable racing weapons.

Glad to hear that you were able to find out what's been ailing your foot, but I am sorry to hear the prognosis. One way or another, I hope you have the opportunity to run pain-free in the future!

Ditto what emma and Brenna said, glad to hear you have an answer, at least, and thanks for the update! In my personal experience I've noticed not much keeps Drew away from running, so I have no doubt you'll be at full strength as soon as is humanly possible. STUD!

Are you racing this weekend?

Thanks for the support!

Brenna, I do plan on doing plenty of research on it before I would do the surgery. I actually found a blog of someone who just had the surgery done a couple of months ago so I'm going to follow that to see how the recovery goes. I will take your advice and go get a second opinion though.

Maggie, I will be racing this weekend. I've been feeling pretty good lately and the toe pain isn't noticeable racing. I'm looking forward to a fun weekend!
