Notes

Well I struggled to find a track again today but after running around for about 6 miles an old crappy track was empty. I decided to check it out and was a bit depressed to realize I probably shouldn't wear my spikes on it. I still decided to give a mile a try in trainers and figured I had enough excuses built in at this point for any failure. I got out pretty well and ran a 70 for the first 400. I was pretty surprised how I was feeling and was thinking wow I think I can probably keep this up and maybe even cut down the end, but apparently I was already running much slower on the second lap 76. I tried to pick it up for the 3rd and ran a 73 with my legs starting to tighten up. Fortunately my breathing continued to feel pretty good. I thought I could get back to ~70 for the last lap with a little work but I also didn't want to attempt to kick too hard and really make myself sore before trying to pace Nutmeg in a few days. So I attempted to push without going to the well, which apparently is not the way to run the last lap of a mile as it was my slowest and closer to 78. Overall I was right around 4:57 which was pretty disheartening, but I will fall back to all of my excuses (terrible track, trainers, 6 mile warmup, not kicking) as reasons I could easily be much faster in a race scenario. I do hope the track was at least accurate distance as that is the one thing I'm a little concerned about. In the end I'm pretty sure I could run 4:40 in a race scenario right now but I think it would take a really impressive effort. I feel alright with that based on my last year of training but also disappointed to know I ran 4:25 just over a year ago indoors feeling really good.
