Notes
Run leg of the HyVee 5150 US Championship. The start was tough like usual but luckily I had a guy just in front of me running pretty well to keep me motivated. I fought to stay close to him the first mile and even though I was feeling terrible I kept about 10 feet between us. At about 3/4 of a mile I started to feel much better and rolled past him and started to feel like I was going to have a pretty good day. The rest of the run I felt more like a runner which was a lot of fun. I was passing people with ease and feeling really strong. Under a mile to go I caught a big group and saw one guy up the road that works out at the Y. I set my sights on him really kicked it in to catch him at the line. It turns out that might have won me my age group because I only won by 4 seconds and I think that must have been the guy I passed right before him. I'd like to get back into the 16s in triathlons but I feel really good about that bike-run combo. I had the 7th fastest run on the day and the fastest in my age group.
I won my age group in 1:03:06 which got me $750 for my biggest win ever. I was 25th overall and 20 of those guys were Elites. My run and bike combination pretty much compare with all but the top 4-5 Elites so I just need to keep working on my swimming. If my shoulder continues to feel better I think I might get a coach so I can hope to compete with the Elites at some point. Kevin finished in 1:07:41 to get 5th in his age group and $400 too, so it was a very successful day. Overall it was a really good day and still probably my favorite triathlon to compete at.
