Notes

Wilton Eager Beaver 5k. Went down to see Kevin and run the 5k like usual. I got to the starting line and realized the normal top guy that I race here every year wasn't around. I assumed this meant I would be in control but Wilton does have a high school runner that has finished in the top 10 at state the last couple of years. That high school runner got out hard and I jumped right on him. Then in typical high school fashion he slowed a ton after the initial short uphill. I debated just hanging out and waiting to kick to win but I felt good at the initial pace he got out at so I decided to keep rolling. By the half mile I was already pretty clear of the field and decided to just keep running a solid pace. I felt like it was solid but I also felt like I was keeping it comfortable for the first couple of miles. It is a race with long straight stretches and at the 2 mile turn I looked back and couldn't see anyone. I pushed a little harder the last half mile and finished with a really strong kick. I've typically run low 15:20s here with more competition so to still be close to that while basically running a time trial felt really good. The second place runner was around 17:15. I was able to cool down quickly and felt really good on the cool down too which means I can definitely go harder. I still believe the race is short so probably right around the 16 minute mark would seem like an accurate time and effort. Hopefully I can have a few more races that feel this good during the fall.
