Notes

Quite a marathon. One of the worst in history. Temps in the 30s, 30mph head wind, and lots of rain. Back and forth all weekend on what to wear.

I ended up with a long sleeve base, 2 more throw away long sleeves, trash bag, then a hoodie for the walk to the start line. I tossed the hoodie before the start and ripped off the trash bag after 1/2 mile or so. I think I should have kept it on longer. Another mile or 2 down the road I felt warm and decided to ditch the first long sleeve leaving me with 2 long sleeves for the rest of the race. Peeled off the 2nd shirt about a mile from the finish so my bib would show and the green color could be visible to the spouses (and Sarah and Will) at Towne on Boylston.

Joe and I got separated at the start line due to me having to pee again (I also peed twice during the race - more than ever) - maybe the cold?

I decided to check in on my overall pace every 5k and just go by effort - the wind was crazy strong. First 5k felt okay - noticed I was slow but thought it felt about right. The 2nd 5k was a little faster but, again, felt right in line. During the 3rd 5k I slowed back down but with the same effort - felt very confused. From then on I kept getting colder and slower and just felt awful. Lots of shivering and shaking. I noticed my legs did not feel right standing in the porta potty (twice) - maybe the old glute/piroformis thing was also to blame but I think it was mostly the conditions. I just could not find my stride while shaking, breathing hard, and freezing. I kept up the guy schedule for most of the race (every 5 miles) but towards the end just had laser focus to get in a hot shower and skipped a few aid stations.

I kept seeing med tents and was very tempted to get out of the elements and get warm - very hard to keep going. It happened so early it made for a VERY long race. Never stopped (except to pee), just the legs would not turn over. Calf cramped later in the hotel room but nothing real eminent on the course.

At the turn on Hereford, Robyn passed me, which allowed me to speed up down Boylston to make sure I crossed the line in front of her even though she started 20 min behind me. She walloped all the boys with a 3:18. I only saw Higgi on the course as he was walking/jogging it in due to his previous injury. Everyone else came in slower than expected but able to hold it together.

Oddest race experience to date. Maybe hyperthermia signs mixed with my glutes/hamstrings/piriformis never feeling fresh during the taper.
