Notes
Started out in control trying to stay at MP of 7:57 or a bit slower. Goal was to maintain steady pace through mile 10. Really crowded first miles. Slow start. Ran with Tom for first half. Water stops were busy and slow. Always hit last on left for water. Did eGel at 6 miles, 12 miles, 18 miles... Lost Tom at half mark. Ran into Rick Lyons who started ahead of me, but said he had over hydrated and needed to pee twice. I dropped him. Felt warm in Framinham and dumped water on head. Legs just didn't seem to have much speed today. Perhaps having to work two 70 plus hour weeks before the race is NOT a good idea! Not quite sure why I couldn't pick up pace. Most training runs were faster! Stride rate was good for first 10 miles averaging 88-90 spm x 2. Newton hills were tough but motored up them steady. At mile 21 to end really needed to zone and started stating mantra of, "Strong legs, light feet!" Who knows where that came from! It helped and kept saying it all the way to Hereford. As I turned on to Boylston I picked it up a bit to the finish. I was actually surprised at how many people I passed the last four miles. Many people were walking - just like me two years ago! No hammie pain... But calves were complaining during last three. Have to happy with race though I had really thought a 3:28 was possible. Legs and energy levels were not there. I did BQ with 1:55 to spare for 55-59 age group time of 3:40, but the old man turns 60 on December 6th and therefore get another 15 mins of qualifying time or 3:55! So a BQ of 17:55 plus!! The tragedies of the day make the joy of running hard to fathom. But… we all need to get back up and show the world we are Boston Strong!
